Srinagar, May 13:Noted writer, columnist and poet Mir Shokat from Jammu & Kashmir has been honoured with the prestigious Indian Literature Award 2026 by the Indian Literature & Arts Society for his remarkable contribution to historical literature in the Urdu language.
According to the award declaration issued by the Society on May 13, Mir Shokat was recognised for his outstanding literary work and his ability to present history through compelling storytelling and meticulous research. The honour marks a significant milestone in his literary career and highlights his growing influence in contemporary Urdu literature.
The award-winning recognition has primarily been attributed to his historical book “Mere Hissa Ka Poonch”, which vividly narrates the history, culture and lived experiences of the Poonch region of Jammu & Kashmir. The Society noted that the book successfully revives historical events and characters while preserving the cultural heritage of the region through an engaging narrative style.
The declaration further stated that Mir Shokat’s writings reflect authenticity, emotional depth and a profound understanding of historical context, making his work accessible to modern readers while retaining its historical essence.
The Society also observed that the recognition is not merely a personal achievement for Mir Shokat, but an inspiration for emerging writers from Jammu & Kashmir to explore their own narratives and literary traditions.
The award was announced by Pankaj Kumar, President of the Indian Literature & Arts Society, Bengaluru.
