Health Minister Orders Overhaul After Only 4 of 40 Doctors Found on Duty in Pulwama

Srinagar: Minister for Health, Medical Education, School Education, Higher Education Sakina Itoo, on Sunday said that a major reshuffle of doctors across Jammu and Kashmir is inevitable to improve healthcare delivery and ensure better patient care.

Speaking to media persons during her surprise visit to District Hospital Pulwama, Minister Sakina Itoo, as per JKNS, said, “Doctors have been sitting at the same places for 5, 10, or even more years. There is a dire need for reshuffling, and going forward, our next steps will focus on this. A major reshuffle is absolutely necessary.”

She said doctors who have been posted at one location for more than three or four years will be shifted. “This is essential to improve the healthcare system. For example, if an operation theatre in any hospital is closed and a patient in need of emergency surgery has to be shifted to another facility, their life may be lost on the way. In such cases, there must be accountability,” she remarked.

Dr. Itoo expressed serious concern over the poor arrangements and unhygienic conditions she witnessed at the Pulwama hospital. “This government, under the leadership of Omar Abdullah, cannot compromise on patient care. When I came here today, I found no proper arrangements for cleanliness. The bad smell was unbearable enough to make even a healthy person fall sick, let alone a patient whose condition could worsen. Everything must be improved,” she said.

Pointing out a serious lapse in staffing, she added, “Here, 40 doctors are posted, but when I arrived, only 4 were present. It may be Sunday, but patients are coming in large numbers. Patient care is our top priority, and whatever steps are needed to fix this, we will take them immediately.”

Dr. Itoo also said that similar issues exist in other hospitals. “Yesterday, I visited Qazigund Emergency Hospital, and today I am here. Across hospitals, we are seeing patterns of neglect that need urgent correction. These habits, developed over the last 10 years, need to change. We must bring the system back on track.”

The Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to improving emergency preparedness, including ensuring that operation theatres remain functional, emergency cases receive timely care, and patient safety is prioritized.

“Our government inherited a healthcare system with serious deficiencies in infrastructure, staffing, and management. But we are committed to fixing them. The government I serve, under the leadership of Omar Abdullah, is dedicated to ensuring that people of Jammu and Kashmir receive the best possible healthcare. There will be no compromise on this,” she assured.

Dr. Itoo further said the administration is reviewing all aspects of the health sector, including staff deployment, hospital hygiene, and emergency care systems. “We will take strong measures very soon. These changes will help save lives in critical situations like blood loss cases or heart attack patients who need immediate treatment. InshaAllah, we will ensure these problems are resolved quickly,” she added.

It is pertinent to mention that widespread public outrage erupted after the SMHS incident, where patient care was severely disrupted due to a doctors’ strike that escalated following the alleged slapping of a doctor by an attendant.

In response, Health Minister Sakina Itoo has been conducting surprise visits to hospitals across the Valley including JVC Bemina, SMHS, Qazigund, and, most recently, Pulwama Hospital where she found alarming gaps in patient care and an absence of adequate medical staff. (JKNS)

‘Possibly hostile’ alien threat detected in unknown interstellar object, a shocking new study claims

0

Srinagar: A mysterious intergalactic object could potentially be a “hostile” alien spacecraft that’s slated to attack our planet in November, according to a controversial new study by a small group of scientists.

“The consequences, should the hypothesis turn out to be correct, could potentially be dire for humanity,” the researchers wrote in the inflammatory paper, which was published July 16 to the preprint server arXiv, South West News Service reported.

Dubbed 3I/ATLAS, the interstellar entity was discovered on July 1, rocketing toward the sun at more than 130,000 mph, Live Science reported. Less than 24 hours later, it was confirmed to be an interstellar object with initial observations suggesting that it could be a comet that measures up to 15 miles in diameter — larger than Manhattan.

However, in the new paper, the trio of researchers suggested that it might be a piece of extraterrestrial spy technology in disguise.

One of the researchers, Avi Loeb — a prominent Harvard astrophysicist known for linking extraterrestrial objects to alien life — previously made waves after floating the theory that 2017 interstellar object ʻOumuamua could be an artificial recon probe sent by an alien civilization, based on its odd shape and acceleration.

In this study, which he collaborated on with Adam Hibberd and Adam Crowl of the Initiative for Interstellar Studies in London, Loeb postulated that 3I/ATLAS’s trajectory suggests a similarly alien origin.

The trio felt the object’s speed — which was significantly faster than ʻOumuamua and other objects — and the fact that it entered our solar system from a different angle than its predecessors offer “various benefits to an extraterrestrial intelligence,” Loeb wrote in a blog post.

One benefit is that 3I/ATLAS will make close approaches to Jupiter, Mars and Venus, which could allow aliens to stealthily plant spy “gadgets” there, Loeb wrote.

When the so-called undercover UFO reaches its closest to the Sun (perihelion) in late November, it will be concealed from Earth’s view. “This could be intentional to avoid detailed observations from Earth-based telescopes when the object is brightest or when gadgets are sent to Earth from that hidden vantage point,” Loeb declared.

If this anomaly is a “technological artifact,” this could support the dark forest hypothesis, which argues we haven’t found signs of extraterrestrial entities because they are remaining undercover to shield themselves from predators or prey.

Loeb warns that this could suggest that an attack is likely and would “possibly require defensive measures to be undertaken.”

The problem is that 3I/ATLAS is traveling too fast for an Earth-based spacecraft to intercept it before it exits the solar system. “It is therefore impractical for earthlings to land on 3I/ATLAS at closest approach by boarding chemical rockets, since our best rockets reach at most a third of that speed,” Loeb wrote.

However, other scientists have thrown cold water on the so-called alien origins of the object, which they believe is a comet.

“All evidence points to this being an ordinary comet that was ejected from another solar system, just as countless billions of comets have been ejected from our own solar system,” added Samantha Lawler, an astronomer at the University of Regina in Canada who studies solar system dynamics, Live Science reported.

In fact, even Loeb admitted in his blog that his alien spy probe theory is a bit far-fetched: “By far, the most likely outcome will be that 3I/ATLAS is a completely natural interstellar object, probably a comet.”

The researchers also warned the public to take the paper, which has not yet been peer-reviewed, with a grain of salt.

“This paper is contingent on a remarkable but, as we shall show, testable hypothesis, to which the authors do not necessarily ascribe, yet is certainly worthy of an analysis and a report,” they wrote. “The hypothesis is an interesting exercise in its own right, and is fun to pursue, irrespective of its likely validity.”

However, critics have called their project a mockery of the work of other scientists, who have provided plenty of evidence that 3I/ATLAS is not evidence of a pending close encounter.

“Astronomers all around the world have been thrilled at the arrival of 3I/ATLAS, collaborating to use advanced telescopes to learn about this visitor,” Chris Lintott, an astronomer at the University of Oxford who helped simulate 3I/ATLAS’s galactic origins, told Live Science. “Any suggestion that it’s artificial is nonsense on stilts, and is an insult to the exciting work going on to understand this object.” (Agencies)

Dengue returns to J&K: 23 cases reported in 2025

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir has begun witnessing the return of dengue, with 23 confirmed cases reported so far this year.

According to officials, 20 cases have emerged from the Jammu division, while three cases are from other states. Notably, no case has been reported from the Kashmir division as yet.

State Malariologist Dr D. J. Raina, speaking to KNO said that although the figures remain low, the public must adopt a proactive approach in the absence of a vaccine. “Panic is unnecessary, but vigilance and preventive steps are crucial to curb the spread of this painful disease,” he said.

He added that despite a significant increase in dengue testing this year, the number of positive cases remains relatively low. “If people follow preventive guidelines, we can keep this vector-borne disease under control,” Dr Raina emphasised.

Authorities have already started their dengue control efforts across the UT. Measures include the deployment of bio-larvicide fish, extensive fogging and spraying, and a wide-reaching awareness campaign through print, electronic, and social media platforms. Miking and community outreach are also being used to promote safe practices.

The malariologist stressed the importance of eliminating mosquito breeding grounds. “People should avoid storing water in open containers and ensure regular cleaning of domestic water tanks. Solid waste should be properly disposed of and artificial water-holding containers removed,” he said.

He encouraged the use of insecticides in outdoor water storage units as an additional safeguard.

Highlighting the role of the Aedes mosquito, the primary vector for dengue, Dr Raina said it thrives in urban habitats and typically breeds in man-made containers such as discarded tires, mud pots, buckets, and stagnant water sources.

“This mosquito is most active during early morning and late afternoon hours. People must wear clothes that reduce skin exposure and use mosquito repellents,” he advised.

To manage potential outbreaks, each district hospital has been equipped with dedicated dengue wards, with at least 20 beds earmarked for dengue patients. Testing facilities are fully functional and accessible at the district level.

Patients testing positive are advised to take complete rest, stay well-hydrated, and consume a nutritious diet rich in fruits and vegetables.

The State Malariologist strongly warned against self-medication, particularly the use of painkillers like aspirin or ibuprofen, which can worsen bleeding tendencies in severe cases of dengue.

Typical symptoms of dengue include high fever, severe headache, eye pain (especially behind the eyes), muscle and joint pain, skin rashes, nausea, and vomiting.

In 2024, J&K recorded approximately 7,000 dengue cases. The year 2023 saw 6,403 cases, and 2022 recorded the highest ever—8,269 cases with 18 deaths. In comparison, earlier years saw lower figures, including just two cases in 2009, zero in 2010, and gradual increases in subsequent years.

Dr Raina appealed to the public to actively cooperate with health authorities. “Cleanliness in and around homes, schools, and workplaces is key. Eliminate stagnant water, cover your body to avoid mosquito bites, and use nets while sleeping,” he said. (KNO)

Hajj 2026: HCoI announces new 20-day package for time-strapped pilgrims

Srinagar: The Hajj Committee of India (HCoI) has announced a special 20-day Hajj package for the 2026 pilgrimage, aimed at individuals who cannot spare time for the usual 35–40-day stay due to work or personal commitments.

Officials from the J&K Hajj Committee told KNO that while the package offers a shorter stay, primarily by reducing the number of days in Madina, it does not significantly lower the overall cost of the pilgrimage.

“The package is meant for those who cannot stay for the full duration. However, the expenses remain nearly the same because airfare, transportation, and most service charges are unchanged. The only adjustment is in accommodation,” the official said.

The official added that under this new category, India has been allotted 10,000 seats, with around 490 slots reserved for J&K across seven embarkation points, including Delhi.

“Only 66 application forms have been received so far from J&K under the new package,” officials said.

Meanwhile, the last date to apply for Hajj 2026 is July 31, and officials expect that this new option might attract those struggling with tight schedules.

Last year, 3,606 pilgrims from J&K performed Hajj, while this year’s application numbers remain low at 28% of the expected quota, indicating a downward trend.

As per the officials, the highest number of applications so far has come from Srinagar, where 527 applications have been received against an expected quota of 1,113 (47.34%). Pulwama follows with 194 applications out of 408 (47.60%). Samba district, however, tops the chart in percentage terms with 87.61% applications (19 out of 22).

J&K is witnessing a rapid decline in the Hajj pilgrimage. The comparative data for 2024 and 2025 reveals a sharp decline in all districts of Jammu and Kashmir. (KNO)

J&K needs CM who delivers, not one who makes excuses: Bukhari

Srinagar: Apni Party President Syed Altaf Bukhari on Saturday strongly criticized the National Conference (NC), questioned the implementation of the party’s election manifesto and accused it of failing to deliver on its promises.

Speaking to the reporters, Bukhari, as per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), asked, “Which of the manifestos of the National Conference has been implemented?” He said political accountability cannot be evaded by citing lack of power, especially when parties knew the limitations before entering the electoral race.

“You knew from the start that you didn’t have power, yet you fought elections. Now you are taking refuge under that excuse,” he said, while hinting towards J&K CM Omar.

Explaining the typical governance cycle, Bukhari said, “When a government gets a mandate, it starts delivering from the beginning. The first two years are for delivery, the middle years for consolidation, and the last year is for announcing popular projects to gain votes. But we haven’t seen anything of that sort from the NC.”

He further stated that many people did not believe his party’s warnings in the past, but today, the public is beginning to recognize the truth of Apni Party’s earlier positions. “At that time, people didn’t believe us. But today, they say we were right,” Bukhari said. (KNO)

J&K to get statehood soon, govt not afraid of protests: BJP’s Ashok Koul

Srinagar: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) General Secretary (Organisation), Ashok Koul, on Saturday reiterated that Jammu and Kashmir will regain its statehood soon, asserting that the government is not afraid of protests or political pressure over the issue.

Speaking to reporters here, Koul, as per KNO said the Centre has already committed to restoring statehood at an appropriate time. He urged people to trust the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.

“The government has said it will restore statehood when the time is right. We have full trust in the words of PM Modi and HM Amit Shah. When they feel it is appropriate, they will act. There is no fear of protests influencing the timeline,” he said.

Dismissing the notion that fresh assembly elections are a prerequisite for the restoration of statehood, the BJP leader said the process is not dependent on each other. “Restoration of statehood doesn’t require fresh elections. This NC government is likely to get statehood during its tenure,” he added.

Koul said that day-to-day governance issues like ration availability, electricity supply, and regularisation of daily wagers have no direct link to the question of statehood. “Statehood is not necessary for ensuring basic services. The current government can still provide these facilities. Statehood is not a barrier,” he said.

Defending the BJP-led central government’s 2019 move to abrogate Article 370 and reorganise J&K, Koul claimed that the region is now on a progressive path.

“We are working towards ‘Naya Jammu and Kashmir’ — something only possible after 2019. Without that change, J&K’s fate would have remained uncertain,” he said.

The BJP leader also signalled the party’s full preparedness for the upcoming Panchayat and Urban Local Body (ULB) elections, dates expected to be announced soon.

He said the party has built a strong presence at the grassroots level and is ready to contest local body elections across the Union Territory.

“Whether it’s panchayats or polling booths, our workers are active and continuously reaching the ground. The BJP is fully prepared for the elections whenever they are held,” Koul said, after the joining of several retired army personnel on Kargil Vijay Diwas.

The event, as per the BJP General Secretary (Org), not only celebrated the military victory of 1999 but also marked a symbolic political consolidation, with veterans joining the party, boosting its local cadre strength in the frontier district of Kupwara.

Koul praised the efforts of the local BJP leadership for their groundwork in expanding the party’s reach in the region. He reiterated the party’s commitment to democratic processes and emphasised that grassroots elections are essential for development and governance.

“The BJP is not just a political party here; it is becoming a movement that connects with people at the ground level in Kashmir,” he added. (KNO)
