The Remarkable Benefits of Cuscuta: Nature’s Unique Parasitic Plant

By: Mr Khursheed Ahmad

Srinagar: Cuscuta, commonly known as dodder, is a fascinating parasitic plant that has captured the attention of herbalists, researchers, and traditional medicine practitioners for centuries. With its thread-like, yellow or orange stems and lack of chlorophyll, Cuscuta relies entirely on host plants for nutrients. While it may seem like an unlikely candidate for health benefits, Cuscuta has been used in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), for its potential therapeutic properties. This article explores the benefits of Cuscuta, its uses, and the science behind its applications, while also addressing its ecological role and precautions.

What is Cuscuta?

Cuscuta belongs to the Convolvulaceae family and is characterized by its leafless, twining stems that wrap around host plants, drawing nutrients through specialized structures called haustoria. Found in various parts of the world, including Asia, Europe, and North America, Cuscuta has over 200 species, with Cuscuta chinensis and Cuscuta campestris being among the most studied for their medicinal properties. In traditional medicine, the seeds, stems, and sometimes the whole plant are used to prepare remedies.

Traditional Uses of Cuscuta

Cuscuta has a rich history in herbal medicine, particularly in Asia. In TCM, Cuscuta chinensis (known as Tu Si Zi) is valued for its ability to tonify the kidneys, liver, and spleen. In Ayurveda, it is used to balance the body’s energies and support reproductive health. Its traditional uses include:

Reproductive Health Support: Cuscuta is often used to enhance fertility, improve libido, and address issues like impotence and premature ejaculation.

Liver and Kidney Health: It is believed to nourish the liver and kidneys, promoting vitality and overall wellness.

Anti-Aging Properties: In TCM, Cuscuta is considered a tonic for longevity, helping to strengthen the body and improve energy levels.

Digestive Aid: Some cultures use Cuscuta to alleviate constipation and support gastrointestinal health.

Skin Health: Topical applications of Cuscuta extracts have been used to treat skin conditions and promote wound healing.

Scientifically Supported Benefits of Cuscuta

Modern research has begun to validate some of the traditional claims about Cuscuta, revealing its potential as a source of bioactive compounds. Here are some of the key benefits supported by preliminary studies:

1.  Antioxidant Properties
Cuscuta is rich in flavonoids, phenolic compounds, and other antioxidants that help combat oxidative stress in the body. These compounds neutralize free radicals, which can reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular issues, and neurodegenerative disorders. A 2016 study published in Pharmaceutical Biology found that Cuscuta chinensis extracts exhibited significant antioxidant activity, suggesting its potential in preventing cellular damage.

2.  Anti-Inflammatory Effects
Inflammation is a root cause of many health conditions, from arthritis to heart disease. Cuscuta contains compounds like quercetin and kaempferol, which have demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties in preclinical studies. These compounds may help reduce inflammation, making Cuscuta a potential candidate for managing inflammatory conditions.

3.  Reproductive and Sexual Health
Cuscuta has long been used as an aphrodisiac and fertility enhancer. Research suggests that its seeds may improve sperm quality and motility, potentially aiding male fertility. A study in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine (2015) found that Cuscuta chinensis extracts improved reproductive parameters in animal models, supporting its traditional use for enhancing sexual health.

4.  Liver Protection
In TCM, Cuscuta is used to support liver function, and studies have shown that it may protect the liver from damage caused by toxins or oxidative stress. A 2018 study in Journal of Ethnopharmacology indicated that Cuscuta extracts could reduce liver injury in animal models, likely due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

5.  Immune System Support
Cuscuta’s bioactive compounds may enhance immune function by modulating immune responses. Some studies suggest that its polysaccharides have immunomodulatory effects, which could help the body fight infections and maintain overall health.

6.  Potential Anti-Cancer Properties
Preliminary research has explored Cuscuta’s potential in cancer prevention. Its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds may inhibit the growth of cancer cells. A 2019 study in Frontiers in Pharmacology found that Cuscuta chinensis extracts showed cytotoxic effects against certain cancer cell lines, though more research is needed to confirm these findings in humans.

Ecological and Agricultural Role

Beyond its medicinal benefits, Cuscuta plays a unique role in ecosystems. As a parasitic plant, it can influence plant communities by controlling invasive species or competing with host plants. In agriculture, Cuscuta is often considered a weed due to its ability to reduce crop yields. However, its presence can also be harnessed for ecological benefits, such as reducing the dominance of aggressive plant species in certain environments.

Precautions and Side Effects

While Cuscuta offers promising benefits, it should be used with caution:

Consult a Healthcare Professional: Always consult a doctor or herbalist before using Cuscuta, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medications.

Potential Allergies: Some individuals may experience allergic reactions to Cuscuta preparations.

Drug Interactions: Cuscuta may interact with medications, particularly those affecting the liver or hormonal system.

Quality Control: Ensure that Cuscuta products are sourced from reputable suppliers, as contamination or misidentification can occur.

How to Use Cuscuta

Cuscuta is typically available in the form of seeds, extracts, powders, or capsules. In traditional medicine, it is often prepared as a decoction or tea, sometimes combined with other herbs to enhance its effects. Dosages vary depending on the condition being treated and the form of Cuscuta used, so it’s essential to follow professional guidance.

Conclusion

Cuscuta is a remarkable plant with a long history of use in traditional medicine and emerging scientific support for its health benefits. From its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties to its potential in supporting reproductive and liver health, Cuscuta offers a range of therapeutic possibilities. However, its use should be approached with care, and further research is needed to fully understand its mechanisms and efficacy. As interest in natural remedies grows, Cuscuta stands out as a unique and promising plant that bridges traditional wisdom with modern science.

If you’re considering incorporating Cuscuta into your wellness routine, consult a qualified healthcare provider to ensure it’s safe and appropriate for your needs. With its rich history and potential benefits, Cuscuta is a testament to the power of nature’s lesser-known treasures.

By ‘revoking’ Indus Water Treaty PM Modi rectified decades old blunder: LG Sinha

Srinagar: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Saturday hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s landmark decision to “revoke” the Indus Water Treaty (IWT), calling it a historic correction of a “decades-old blunder” that denied Jammu and Kashmir its rightful share of development and prosperity.

Speaking at a launch function of a monograph ‘Indus Water Treaty-Mirroring the Facts’ authored by Sant Kumar Sharma, here LG Sinha, according to KNO said, “Despite Pakistan bleeding Jammu and Kashmir through cross-border terrorism for over three decades, Indian rivers continued to irrigate Pakistan’s fields due to the one-sided treaty.”

“No previous government had the courage to revoke the IWT. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has done what no one imagined. He gave a clear message after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack — terror and talks cannot go together, and blood and water cannot flow together,” he said.

The LG stated that with the termination of the treaty, India has now secured full rights over the waters of the Jhelum and Chenab rivers. “India’s water will now flow within India and benefit Indian citizens. This will allow Jammu and Kashmir to harness its true hydroelectric potential, irrigate barren lands in Jammu, and provide momentum to infrastructure development,” he asserted.

He emphasized that this historic move will bring immense benefits to Jammu and Kashmir, enabling the Union Territory to fully harness its potential. “A new wave of infrastructure development will gain momentum across the region,” he added.

LG Sinha said that India will now focus on building the necessary infrastructure—including power plants, water diversions, and reservoirs—to optimally utilize its water resources for national development.

He said, “Pakistan’s economy is heavily dependent on the Indus Water System. The suspension of the treaty will have a direct impact on the terror-sponsoring country,” LG Sinha said, emphasizing that India will not allow its goodwill to be taken for granted anymore.

RECALLS PARLIAMENTARY DEBATES

Recalling parliamentary debates dating back to the 1960s LG Sinha said, “Nearly 65 years ago, Iqbal Singh, a Congress legislator from Ferozepur, had strongly criticized the government’s appeasement policy towards Pakistan, stating that it had weakened India’s position.”

LG Sinha said that Singh had termed the Indus Water Treaty a significant loss for the people of India. In 1970, another Congress legislator warned that the treaty had already resulted in a financial loss of over Rs 100 crore. “It was widely acknowledged at that point of time that India was more eager than Pakistan to sign the treaty six decades ago. Many described the Indus Water Treaty as a betrayal of the Indian people. An editorial in The Times of India at the time even remarked that by signing the treaty, India had effectively surrendered to Pakistan.”

“The Parliamentarian Ashok Mehta had labelled the IWT as a dangerous and one-sided agreement, cautioning that its negative consequences would become evident over time. Many parliamentarians, cutting across party lines, had opposed the then Prime Minister’s decision to enter into such an unequal arrangement. Even late Atal Bihari Vajpayee had predicted that India would pay a heavy price. The treaty was unfair, one-sided, and restricted J&K’s development,” LG Sinha added.

SUPPORT FOR TERRORISM HAS EVAPORATED

Referring to the Pahalgam terror attack, LG Sinha said that the people of Kashmir had openly condemned the incident, reflecting a changed mindset. “Kashmiris have realized their future lies with India. The support for terrorism has evaporated. Pakistan has only brought destruction to this land. Terrorism is on its last legs,” he said

“For three decades, Pakistan‑sponsored terrorists have shed the blood of countless innocent Kashmiris—Even a FIR was not registered. At Pakistan’s behest, many Kashmiris were brutally murdered. Those who collaborated with Pakistan were given public funerals attended by many, while the families of innocent victims were shunned—even at their last rites. Graves of terrorists were frequently visited and adorned with floral tributes, while those who sided with terrorists often advanced their own careers. A narrative was deliberately crafted: security forces became the aggressors, terrorists the victims—and the innocent Kashmiris who were killed by the terrorists were simply not counted. No one came to the aid of those murdered by terrorists,” the Lieutenant Governor said.

SOME ELEMENTS CONTINUE TO SPEAK THE LANGUAGE OF TRF

LG Sinha warned: “Some elements continue to speak the language of TRF. The police and security forces remain steadfast in their commitment to peace and will take strict legal action against such elements.”

He appealed to every resident of J&K, asserting that it is their solemn duty to build a terror-free and drug-free Union Territory.

He also paid tribute to the Indian Army, Jammu & Kashmir Police, and Central Armed Police Forces, who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the region’s peace and development.

“Over the past 30 years, Pakistan and its terrorist proxies have spilled the blood of Kashmiris,” he declared. “Yet some shamelessly propagate the TRF’s hateful rhetoric—that same TRF which the United States has officially designated as a terrorist organization. We will tighten the noose around anyone who uses this language to incite or disrupt peace. Anyone questioning our nation’s sovereignty and integrity will be dealt with severely.”

He condemned false narratives surrounding infrastructure projects like the Kashmir–mainland railway—labelled by some as steps toward demographic manipulation, cultural invasion, alcoholism, vulgarity, or over tourism. “Stop peddling this language. Enough politics has been played using the dead bodies of our people. Let the new generation breathe free air and live in peace. There is no place here for conflict profiteers,” LG Sinha said.

He expressed his commitment to deliver justice to victims of terrorism. “Victims’ families will receive government jobs, financial support, and their encroached properties will be restored. The perpetrators and sympathizers will be brought to justice.”

LG Sinha warned against those promoting narratives that align with terrorist groups, calling them “conflict profiteers”. “Stop the politics over graves. Let the new generation live in peace and dignity,” he said.

He also saluted the bravery of Indian Army, J&K Police, and CAPFs for their sacrifices in maintaining peace in the region and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building a “terror-free and drug-free Jammu and Kashmir.” (KNO)

US enforces Trump’s call for justice to Pahalgam terror attack victims, designates LeT proxy TRF as foreign terrorist organisation

Srinagar: Enforcing President Trump’s call for justice for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, United States, Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday said that the US has designated ‘The Resistance Front’, (TRF) a proxy of Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) that was behind the carnage that left 26 people, mostly tourists dead, as a foreign terrorist organisation.

Rubio, according to KNO, said the Department of State is designating the TRF as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation (FTO) and Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT).

“TRF and other associated aliases have been added to LeT’s designation as a FTO and SDGT pursuant to Section 219 of the Immigration and Nationality Act and Executive Order 13224, respectively. The Department of State has also reviewed and maintained the FTO designation of LeT,” he said.

Rubio further said that this action against the TRF “demonstrates the Trump administration’s commitment to protecting our national security interests, countering terrorism, and enforcing President Trump’s call for justice for the Pahalgam attack”.

“This (Pahalgam attack) was the deadliest attack on civilians in India since the 2008 Mumbai attacks conducted by LeT. TRF has also claimed responsibility for several attacks against Indian security forces, including most recently in 2024,” the secretary of state said.

Reacting to the development, the Indian Embassy in Washington said this shows how strong the India-US counter-terrorism cooperation is.

The Resistance Front (TRF) claimed responsibility for the Pahalgam terror attack, but later backtracked as tensions soared between India and Pakistan.

Pertinently, National Investigation Agency (NIA) has identified TRF head Sheikh Sajjad Gul as the mastermind of the attack.

In a post on X, the Indian Embassy underlined New Delhi’s firm stance against terrorism.

“Another demonstration of strong India-USA counter-terrorism cooperation. Appreciate the Department of State for listing The Resistance Front (TRF) as a designated Foreign Terrorist Organization and Specially Designated Global Terrorist. TRF is a proxy of Lashkar-e-Tayyiba and claimed responsibility for the April 22 terror attack on civilians in Pahalgam. ZERO TOLERANCE for terrorism!” it said.

In retaliation for the Pahalgam attack, India launched Operation Sindoor early on May 7, targeting nine terror infrastructure sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The attack on terrorist camps led to breaking out of skirmishes between India and Pakistan that continued till May 10. Hostilities ended after Pakistan Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) approached his counterpart in India and requested for a ceasefire. (KNO)
