Amid overcast conditions, Amarnath Yatra progresses smoothly; Over 13,000 perform darshan on Tuesday

Srinagar: Despite overcast weather conditions in the higher reaches of Kashmir, the annual Amarnath Yatra continues to progress smoothly, with thousands of devotees undertaking the pilgrimage to the holy cave.

According to official figures, a total of 13,490 pilgrims performed darshan at the holy cave on July 15, including 9,096 male, 3,546 female, 199 children, 67 sadhus, and 14 sadhvis. 568 security personnel also availed darshan.

The cumulative number of yatris who have paid obeisance at the holy cave shrine so far this year has now reached 2,34,001, officials said.

Meanwhile, fresh batches of pilgrims continue to proceed from the Jammu base camp towards the Valley. As per data, a total of 6,388 yatris left Jammu in the 14th batch on Tuesday. These included 2,501 pilgrims via the Baltal axis and 3,887 via the Pahalgam route.

The convoy consisted of 248 vehicles, comprising 129 buses, 38 medium motor vehicles (MMVs), 73 light motor vehicles (LMVs), and 8 two-wheelers.

Among the pilgrims were 4,886 males, 1,300 females, 15 children, 158 sadhus, and 21 sadhvis.

Despite intermittent rain and cloudy conditions, authorities said the yatra is continuing peacefully and all necessary arrangements including medical aid, escort security, and traffic regulation remain in place.

Over 51 lakh undertake Amarnath Yatra in past 15 years

Over the past decade and a half, the Amarnath Yatra has seen a cumulative footfall of more than 51 lakh pilgrims. Official figures reflect sharp fluctuations in pilgrim turnout, influenced by both natural and administrative factors.

In 2010, 4.55 lakh pilgrims made their way to the Amarnath cave shrine. The numbers peaked in the following two years, with 6.21 lakh pilgrims recorded in 2011 and 6.35 lakh in 2012. However, subsequent years witnessed a decline, reaching a low of 2.21 lakh in 2016.

The dip was attributed to weather-related disruptions and security concerns. The turnaround began in the years that followed, with authorities ramping up facilities and tightening safety arrangements.

The Yatra began regaining momentum, crossing 3 lakh in 2018 and remaining steady until the pandemic halted the pilgrimage entirely in 2020 and 2021.

In 2022, the Yatra resumed with 3.04 lakh pilgrims, followed by a notable increase in 2023 as 4.50 lakh devotees participated. The upward trend continued into 2024, when a record 5 lakh pilgrims—both domestic and international—undertook the journey to the high-altitude shrine.

It was the highest turnout since 2012. Between 2021 and 2024, the duration of the pilgrimage varied widely. In 2021, it was scheduled for 56 days but was suspended midway due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The yatra was conducted over 43 days in 2022, 62 days in 2023, and 52 days in 2024. (KNO)

Shocking, Shameful: Mamata Banerjee slams restrictions on Omar Abdullah’s Martyrs’ graveyard visit

Srinagar: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday strongly condemned the Jammu and Kashmir administration for allegedly preventing former CM Omar Abdullah from visiting the Martyrs’ Graveyard in Srinagar on the occasion of Martyrs’ Day.

In a post on X, Banerjee called the move “unfortunate” and “shocking,” asserting that it violated the fundamental rights of a citizen.

“What is wrong in visiting the graveyard of martyrs? This is not only unfortunate, it also snatches the democratic right of a citizen. What happened this morning to an elected Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is unacceptable. Shocking. Shameful,” Banerjee wrote.

Her statement came after National Conference leader Omar Abdullah said he was barred from offering tributes at the Naqshband Sahib shrine, where the martyrs of July 13, 1931, are buried. The day commemorates the 22 Kashmiris killed by the Dogra regime, a turning point in the Valley’s political consciousness.

The incident sparked widespread political outrage, with several leaders condemning what they described as “deliberate suppression” of symbolic democratic gestures.

Banerjee’s sharp remarks underscore a growing sense of concern among national opposition leaders about the curbing of civil liberties in Jammu and Kashmir.

Mirwaiz says Omar Abdullah tasted what common Kashmiris face daily

Srinagar: Reacting to the reported restrictions faced by former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said the experience reflects the daily reality of ordinary Kashmiris.

“Power teaches little, Powerlessness teaches more!” Mirwaiz tweeted, adding that Omar had “tasted the bitter medicine of authoritarian high handedness and helplessness” that people in Kashmir deal with regularly.

He expressed hope that this would shift the former CM’s focus toward protecting dignity and restoring the fundamental rights of the people.

The comment has sparked conversation online, with many saying political leaders must now acknowledge the very system they once upheld.

Child Suffers Seizure on Kashmir Highway, Stopped by Jawan Amid Yatra Convoy: Mehbooba Mufti Raises Alarm

Srinagar: Former J&K Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Sunday slammed security forces after alleging that a family with a child suffering a seizure was denied passage on the South Kashmir highway due to Amarnath Yatra restrictions.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Mufti said the parents “begged a jawan” to let them pass, but he remained “unmoved and inconsiderate.” She warned that such incidents could prove fatal and deepen public resentment.

“Kashmiris have always welcomed Yatris, but restrictions cannot come at the cost of lives,” she said, urging immediate course correction to avoid turning the Yatra into a source of “helplessness and dread” for locals.

Security forces have yet to respond to the allegation, but the post has reignited debate around civilian hardships caused by convoy movements and highway closures during the Yatra.

Omar Abdullah shares video of ‘grappling with J&K police during Martyrs’ Day visit

Srinagar: A day after the Jammu and Kashmir Police prevented Kashmiri leaders, including ministers, from visiting the historic martyrs’ graveyard by house arresting them, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and other National Conference leaders reached Srinagar’s old city on Monday morning to pay tributes to the 22 civilians killed on July 13, 1931.

Omar also said he was “grappled” by police during the visit.

He, however, scaled a wall to reach the graveyard. “Paid my respects & offered Fatiha at the graves of the martyrs of July 13, 1931.  The unelected government tried to block my way, forcing me to walk from Nawhatta Chowk. They blocked the gate to Naqshband Sahab shrine, forcing me to scale a wall,” Omar wrote on X.

“They tried to physically grapple me, but I was not going to be stopped today.”

In a video he posted on X, Omar said he was “physically grappled.” “But I am made of sterner stuff & was not to be stopped. I was doing nothing unlawful or illegal. In fact, these “protectors of the law” need to explain under what law they were trying to stop us from offering Fatiha,” Omar said.

Not only the CM, but also Jammu and Kashmir Minister Sakina Itoo arrived at the graveyard on a scooter.

The Srinagar district administration on Saturday had denied permission to political parties to visit the historic Martyrs’ Graveyard on Martyrs’ Day. On Sunday, valley leaders were placed under house arrest. Martyrs’ Day commemorates the killing of 22 civilians by the Dogra forces on July 13, 1931, during a protest against autocratic rule.

The day has traditionally been marked by visits and tributes at the Nowhatta graveyard, once a state-sanctioned function. After 2019, the tradition was stopped by the LG administration. (Agencies)
