Alleged Rape & Murder of Young Woman in Ganderbal Triggers Widespread Outrage

Srinagar: A young woman’s mysterious death in the Safapora area of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district has triggered massive protests after reports emerged suggesting she may have been raped and murdered.

Locals, civil society members, and traders took to the streets, demanding immediate justice and stringent punishment for the accused.

According to locals, the woman was found dead at her in-laws’ residence. Initially believed to be a case of natural death, the situation took a serious turn after Safapora Police insisted on conducting a postmortem.

“One of the locals, as per news agency JKNS, said, ‘We assembled immediately when we heard something had happened to her. We rushed to her in-laws’ home and found her dead. Safapora and Ganderbal Police both suggested a postmortem, but we didn’t agree at first, thinking it was a natural death. However, Safapora Police insisted and said it must be done. After the postmortem report came, it became clear this wasn’t an accident but a murder. We’re now protesting to demand justice. The killer must be arrested and punished.’”

Another protester said, “We came to offer condolences, and at first, we were told it was an accident. But later, hospital reports revealed it was not a natural death. We were shocked to know it was a murder. Today, we are protesting as one. The entire trade community is here. The market is closed. This is the first such incident in Safapora, and we are at a loss for words. What we’re hearing about this case is horrifying. It’s the height of brutality.”

The protests intensified, with slogans of “Katiloon Ko Phansi Do” echoing through the area. In response, SSP Ganderbal, Khalil Ahmad Poswal, visited Safapora to address the protesters directly.

Speaking to the crowd, SSP Poswal said, “A forensics team was immediately called. All samples have been collected and sent to the lab. I just need your cooperation anyone who saw something or has evidence should come to us and record their statement. I was called yesterday and told to avoid the postmortem, but I said no there will be a postmortem, and action will follow. This case is being treated as murder, and I guarantee a formal arrest will happen. There will be no bail. Anyone found aiding the accused will also be booked. This is not about me; this is about justice.”

He further added, “Please make a team of four responsible members who will stay in touch with the police. If at any point you feel the investigation isn’t being done fairly, you can come to me directly. This is not just a law-and-order issue it’s about a fair investigation.”

As of now, the police have yet to officially name any suspects. However, SSP Poswal’s on-ground assurance and the growing public outrage have intensified pressure on law enforcement agencies to act swiftly.

The incident has deeply shocked the community, with many calling it a dark and disturbing first in the area’s history. The public has vowed to continue protests until justice is delivered. (JKNS)

DGP Prabhat becomes first J&K Police Chief in recent past to visit Lolab

Srinagar: Director General of Police (DGP) Nalin Prabhat visited Lolab Valley in this frontier district on Sunday and became the first J&K Police Chief in the past many years to reach here.

According to the details available with KNO, DGP Prabhat sent a clear message to all by visiting this remote and sensitive area, which lies close to the Line of Control and has faced security challenges for many years.

“The visit made it clear that there will be zero tolerance for terrorism and violence and that the administration is serious about ensuring lasting peace in every part of the Union Territory,” said an official.

He said the DGP reviewed the law-and-order situation, assessed security arrangements, and boosted the morale of local police forces. He was accompanied by senior officers, including SSP Kupwara Ghulam Jeelani Wani.

Locals welcomed the visit and called it a positive and historic step. Many residents said it was the first time they felt truly seen and heard by top-level officials.
People appreciated that the DGP came to the area personally instead of just sending reports or instructions from afar.

“The visit is important as direct contact with people helps create a feeling of safety and inclusion, especially in areas that have suffered from years of conflict. The visit marks a new approach in Kashmir’s security strategy. It includes both strong vigilance and real connection with the people,” said a security expert. (KNO)

Show me one image, which shows damage to any Indian structure: NSA Doval asks foreign media

Srinagar: National Security Advisor, Ajit Doval on Friday launched a scathing attack on foreign media for its biased reportage on India’s successful ‘Operation Sindoor’ against Pakistan.

Speaking at the 62nd convocation of IIT Madras, NSA Doval, according to KNO said, “Foreign press said that Pakistan did that and this…You tell me one photograph, one image, which shows any damage to any Indian (structure), even a glass pane having been broken.”

Referring to the damage caused to air bases in Pakistan, NSA Doval said, “They (foreign media) wrote these things and put out things. The images only showed 13 air bases in Pakistan before and after 10th May, whether it was in Sargodha, Rahim Yar Khan, Chaklala. I am only telling you what the foreign media put out on the basis of images. We are capable of doing that (damage to Pakistani air bases).”

Hailing India’s precision in hitting its targets in the criss-cross of Pakistan on May 7, in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that left 26 civilians dead, the National Security Advisor said that the armed forces “hit nowhere else except the targets.”

The NSA said, “We decided to hit nine terrorist targets deep inside Pakistan, not near the border. We missed none. No unintended location was struck and each target was selected based on specific intelligence.”

“The operation began on May 7 and ended on May 10 after both sides reached an understanding to stop military action,” Doval said.

Lauding the indigenous weapons used during ‘Operation Sindoor’ the National Security Advisor said, “We are proud of how much indigenous content we used. BrahMos was part of it.”

He said India must continue to develop its own defence and technology infrastructure. “We have to develop our indigenous technology,” he added.

The NSA also spoke about India’s development of 5G technology. He said, “China took 12 years and $300 billion to develop 5G. We didn’t have that time or money. The government worked with IIT Madras and private companies to build a fully indigenous 5G system. Today, India’s 5G has nothing foreign in it,” he added. (KNO)

SIA raids 3 locations in J&K in terror funding case

Srinagar: The State Investigation Agency (SIA) Kashmir conducted search operations at three suspected locations in Jammu, Doda, and Handwara in a case linked to terror financing.

According to a statement issued to KNO, these searches aimed to secure critical evidence to unravel a complex conspiracy involving cross-border funding through cryptocurrency, designed to fuel terrorism and destabilise peace in Jammu and Kashmir.

The statement reads search operations also targeted efforts to identify individuals inciting youth against the Union of India, thereby threatening national security.

“Searches are part of an ongoing investigation under FIR No. 12/2022, under Sections 18, 38, and 39 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, along with Sections 120B, 121, and 121A of the Indian Penal Code, registered at Police Station CI-SIA Kashmir. These searches yielded vital evidence, marking a breakthrough in exposing the clandestine financial networks that keep the pot of terrorism boiling in Jammu and Kashmir,” it reads.

It added recovered articles/electronic devices are expected to aid the SIA in identifying and apprehending co-conspirators and accomplices orchestrating these anti-national activities.

“The SIA remains determined in its commitment to rooting out terrorism and its support systems, including sophisticated methods like cryptocurrency-based funding, which are increasingly exploited to perpetuate violence and radicalization,” it reads. (KNO)

Faith overtakes fear as devotee undertakes first Kanwar Yatra from MP to Amarnath

Srinagar: Defying the odds and driven by devotion, Harnam Prasad has been walking for 105 days, covering 1,700 km from Jabalpur on his way to the Amarnath cave shrine in what is a most unusual Kanwar Yatra.

The 21-year-old is now in Udhampur for the last lap of his spiritual odyssey, all through which he has carried four pitchers of holy water from the Gawri Ghat in Jabalpur to offer at the high altitude shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Supported by three friends, Prasad carries water in four pitchers on his shoulders along with Bajrangbali flags and claims this is his first Kanwar Yatra to the Himalayan cave shrine, traditionally known for the ice ‘lingam’ of Lord Shiva.

“I have walked over 1,700 kilometres in 105 days and have reached Udhampur today. The journey has been nothing short of divine. I feel no fear, only faith. Baba Barfani’s energy has protected me and made the journey comfortable and fulfilling,” Prasad said.

His yatra also includes a visit to Rameshwar Jyotirling.

Asserting that fear and terror are forgotten words during the journey to Bholenath, he said faith has driven out fear from every pilgrim on the yatra to the cave shrine. “The rush of pilgrims is a befitting reply to those terrorists who engineered the cowardly attack in Pahalgam,” he said.

Expressing deep gratitude for the arrangements made by the Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory (UT) administration, Prasad praised the hospitality of locals and the security provided along the route. “From Lakhanpur, the entry point to Jammu and Kashmir, the arrangements are excellent. The atmosphere is peaceful.

Prasad added that he is walking in devotion to ‘Gaumata’ (mother cow) and Lord Shiva, and that it is the spiritual call of Mahadev that has brought him this far. “Kashmir is the land of Shiva and Shakti,” he said, describing the yatra as a divine and historic journey.

With community kitchens and lodging centres offering generous support, Prasad said he is overwhelmed by the love and encouragement he has received along the way. “People come forward to offer food and shelter. It’s a divine feeling to be part of this sacred journey to Bholenath,” he added.

The Kanwar Yatra is an annual pilgrimage by Shiva devotees, known as Kanwarias or Bhole, who collect holy Ganga water from places like Haridwar, Gaumukh, Gangotri in Uttarakhand and Ajgaibinath temple in Sultanganj (Bihar). They carry it on foot for hundreds of miles to offer it at local Shiva shrines or key temples. (PTI)
