General Category Candidates Demand Immediate Halt to JK Recruitment Process

Srinagar, Mar 1 : General Category candidates in Jammu and Kashmir have urged the government to halt the ongoing recruitment process until the reservation policy is rationalized. They argue that the current system disproportionately favors reserved categories, leaving Open Merit candidates with inadequate opportunities.

According to the protesting candidates, out of 292 advertised posts, 115 have been allocated to Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC). Additionally, 80 posts are designated for the general category under the OBC, ALC (Actual Line of Control), and RBA (Reserved Backward Area) categories, where SC/ST/OBC candidates cannot apply. The remaining 117 posts fall under Open Merit, with only 1% of selections reportedly coming from reserved categories. This distribution, they claim, results in 67% of selections being from General Category candidates.
Criticizing the policy as unfair, the aspirants argue that despite constituting over 70% of the population, Open Merit candidates secure less than 35% of government jobs in Jammu and Kashmir. They describe this as a “flagrant injustice” that must be rectified immediately.

“The entire onus of addressing this imbalance falls on the ruling government. The recruitment process must be stopped without delay until the reservation policy is rationalized,” the candidates said in a statement. They have called for the Cabinet Sub-Committee to expedite its report and urged the government to ensure a fair and equitable policy revision.

The aspirants also appealed to Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) to set aside party differences in the forthcoming Assembly session and pass legislation capping reservations at less than 40%. Furthermore, they demand the abolition of certain reservation categories that, according to them, have been exploited for decades by individuals residing in principal cities while enjoying affluent lifestyles. Senior MLAs tasked to monitor departments held by different ministers

Srinagar, Feb 28 : In a first such move by an opposition party in Jammu & Kashmir, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has formed a “shadow cabinet” to keep a close watch on the performance of the National Conference-led government in the Union Territory.

Sources told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that BJP has formed a group of senior MLAs to closely examine performance of different departments and question their performance within and outside the Assembly.

“The party has tasked senior MLAs, who served as ministers in the previous PDP-BJP government, to closely monitor departments assigned to them for assembly interventions and other issues,” they said.

According to sources, the leader of opposition Sunil Sharma has played a key role in the formation of the “shadow cabinet”.

Sharma, who is close to the top leadership of BJP, was chosen by the party as its first leader of opposition in Jammu & Kashmir after the party secured 29 seats in 2024 Assembly polls.

Sources privy to the development disclosed that the party has assigned different departments to its senior MLAs to lead the assessment and challenge the ministers holding them within and outside the Assembly.

“This move will enhance the party’s role in scrutinising government actions and policies. It would also help us in effectively raising public issues within and outside the Assembly,” a former BJP minister, who is part of the group, told KNO on condition of anonymity.

The move comes ahead of the budget session of the Assembly, which is expected to be stormy over issues ranging from Article 370, reservation row and other issues.

For the first time in history, the BJP is the main opposition party in Jammu & Kashmir. Before 2008, BJP never crossed a double-digit seat tally in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly. In 2008 polls, it managed to secure 11 seats. In 2014, it secured 25 seats and became part of any government for the first time in J&K’s history—(KNO)
