Over 100 Pakistani policemen dismissed for refusing Champions Trophy duty

Lahore, Feb 26: In an unprecedented move, over 100 policemen of Pakistan’s Punjab Police have been dismissed from service for refusing to perform assigned security duties during the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025, police said on Tuesday.

The dismissed personnel were associated with various wings of the police force.

According to an official of the Punjab Police, more than 100 police officials and officers have been removed from their positions for being found absent from duty on numerous occasions, with several others refusing to perform their assigned tasks during the Champions Trophy.

“The police officials were assigned to provide security for teams travelling between Qaddafi Stadium Lahore and designated hotels but either remained absent or outright refused to take up their responsibilities,” he said.

The official said IGP Punjab Usman Anwar has taken notice of the matter and ordered strict action against the cops in question. “There is no room for negligence when it comes to the security of international events,” he said.

Though there is no official word on why the dismissed police personnel refused to perform their assigned official duties, several local media reports suggest that the sacked cops were feeling overburdened due to longer duty hours.

The Pakistan cricket team has already been eliminated from the Champions Trophy following its humiliating defeats to New Zealand and India.

Meanwhile, Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar has dismissed reports about a possible terror threat to the Champions Trophy tournament in Pakistan.

In an interview with Geo News on Monday, the minister said: “I would like to state on record that Pakistan is peacefully and very ably hosting the ICC Champions Trophy. Our grounds are full, we have fans from all over the world, the crowds are jubilant, our streets are filled with people who are celebrating the victory of cricket.”–(PTI)

Rampant Destruction of Chinar Trees in Anantnag, Authorities Remain Silent

0

Srinagar, Feb 25 : In a disturbing environmental violation, dozens of majestic Chinar trees have been illegally felled in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district, with authorities allegedly turning a blind eye to the destruction. The chopping down of these majestic trees, despite strict regulations for their preservation, has sparked outrage among locals.

Sources reveal that while authorities granted limited permissions to contractors for pruning branches, many misused the approvals and chopped down entire trees to extract maximum wood. This large-scale felling has been reported from multiple areas, including Rani Bagh, Sarnal, and Kadipora, where the once-thriving Chinar trees now lie in ruins.

Locals have expressed deep concern over the administration’s inaction, questioning why no measures have been taken to curb the illegal felling despite the availability of geo-tagging technology meant to protect these heritage trees. “These trees have stood for centuries, providing shade, beauty, and a crucial ecological balance. But vested interests are axing them in broad daylight, and officials are doing nothing,” a local from Anantnag told the news agency Kashmir News Trust.

The Chinar tree, which holds immense historical and cultural significance in Kashmir, is a protected species under the Jammu and Kashmir Preservation of Specified Trees Act, 1969. Under this law, even pruning requires official permission, yet entire trees are being cut with impunity.

Locals and environmental activists have demanded immediate action, urging the administration to identify and penalize those involved in the illegal felling. They have also called for a thorough probe into how contractors managed to exploit the permissions and why authorities have failed to intervene.

“If the destruction continues unchecked, Anantnag and other parts of Kashmir risk losing a vital part of their natural heritage, further exacerbating environmental degradation in the region,” said an elderly man from Kadipora. [KNT]

Irtiqa Mufti Leads PDP’s Campaign to Ban Alcohol in J&K

Srinagar: Irtiqa Mufti, the eldest daughter of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti, has taken a firm political stance against alcohol consumption in Jammu and Kashmir, urging public support for the party’s campaign to ban liquor in the Union Territory.

In a video message on X, Irtiqa called on people to join the movement, emphasizing that banning alcohol is only the first step. “Please be a part of our fight against alcohol and addiction. Sign our digital signature campaign, which I will be linking in my bio soon. But remember, the ban is just the beginning. To make it effective, we need to educate people on the dangers of alcohol and drugs,” she said.

Highlighting the need for rehabilitation instead of social ostracization, she added, “Instead of shunning addicts and leaving them to die, we must establish proper rehabilitation centers to help them recover. If you’re struggling with addiction, please reach out for help.”

Irtiqa stressed that addressing alcohol abuse requires a community-driven approach, not just government intervention. “The government can ban alcohol and take strict action against drug dealers, but the responsibility to fight this menace lies with all of us,” she asserted. She warned that rising alcohol consumption was destroying families in J&K, a region previously known for lower crime rates.

The PDP has launched a signature campaign to garner support for a bill seeking a complete ban on liquor distribution and consumption in J&K. The bill, submitted in the assembly by Mir Mohammad Fayaz, the party MLA from Kupwara, is at the center of the party’s anti-alcohol movement.

The campaign was officially launched at the PDP headquarters by Iltija Mufti, Mehbooba Mufti’s younger daughter, who has been actively involved in politics. Iltija had contested the Bijbehara assembly seat last year but was unsuccessful.

As the debate over alcohol regulation intensifies, the PDP’s move signals a significant political push to address addiction and its impact on Jammu and Kashmir’s youth. (KINS)

Srinagar, Feb 24: Jammu and Kashmir is set to experience a spell of heavy snowfall in higher reaches and rainfall in the plains as a fresh western disturbance becomes active over the region, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted.

According to the IMD, the weather system will remain in effect from Tuesday to Friday (February 25-28), bringing significant changes in weather patterns across Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. The Meteorological Center in Srinagar has issued a yellow watch—advising people to stay updated—due to the likelihood of adverse weather conditions in several areas.

Officials have warned that heavy snowfall may impact connectivity in key routes, including Sadhna Pass, Razdan Pass, Sonmarg-Zojila-Gumri, Mughal Road, and Sinthan Pass. Authorities also anticipate possible disruptions in air travel due to low visibility and snowfall accumulation.

Furthermore, there is a heightened risk of landslides and rockfall incidents, particularly in mountainous regions, which could affect transportation and essential services. Emergency management agencies have been advised to remain on high alert to ensure swift response to any disruptions.

Residents, especially those in high-altitude areas, have been urged to exercise caution and stay informed about weather updates. Authorities have also advised travelers to plan their journeys accordingly and avoid unnecessary movement in affected areas. [KNT]
