Migrant labourer found dead in Bijbehara, probe launched

Bijbehara, Feb 22 : A migrant labourer was found dead under mysterious circumstances in the Bijbehara area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, officials said.

An official told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that the man has been identified as Krishna Karmaal (31) son of Daneshwar Karmaal of Jharkhand.

He was found dead on a road in the Kanjigund area of Bijbehara.

He said that police have initiated investigation into the matter while body had been shifted to GMC Anantnag for medico-legal formalities—(KNO)

PDP To Launch Signature Campaign For Alcohol Ban

Srinagar, Feb 22 : The Peoples Democratic Party on Friday said that it will launch a signature campaign to demand an alcohol ban.

The signature campaign will be launched by party leader and Mehbooba Mufti’s daughter Iltija Mufti on Saturday in Srinagar.

“Alcohol & drugs are wrecking lives & families in J&K. We must come together to put an end to it before it’s too late.
Join me for a signature campaign today at the PDP office Srinagar between 11 AM – 2 PM for an alcohol ban to garner support for the PDP bill on banning alcohol consumption,” Iltija posted on X.

The signature campaign comes at a time when legislators from the ruling National Conference (NC) and PDP have submitted private members’ bills separately in the J&K Assembly seeking a ban on the sale and consumption of alcohol.

The bills will be tabled in the upcoming budget session of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly that begins on March 3.

Last week, a controversy erupted after NC chief spokesman Tanvir Sadiq suggested examining the impact of a liquor ban on tourism. Following outrage, Sadiq asserted that his statement had been misinterpreted.

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) J&K UT Council hosted its Annual Session for 2025-26, themed “Aspiring for New Growth Goals.” The event focused on strategizing economic prosperity and sustainable development for the region.

Distinguished guests included the Hon’ble Chief Minister of the Union Territory of J&K, Mr. Omar Abdullah, as the Chief Guest, and Shri Satish Sharma, Hon’ble Minister for Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, Transport, Science & Technology, Information Technology, Youth Services & Sports and ARI & Trainings Departments as the Guest of Honour.

Applauding CII J&K for successfully conducting its annual session in Srinagar, the Hon’ble Chief Minister Mr. Omar Abdullah acknowledged the resilience of J&K’s industry and commended the businesses that have thrived without relying solely on government subsidies. He emphasized the need for long-term business sustainability and proposed mechanisms to assess business viability beyond ten years. He also encouraged external investments, highlighting their role in job creation and economic expansion. Additionally, he suggested adopting successful policies of other states to ensure better job opportunities for J&K and its residents. Furthermore, to improve the ease of doing business, the Chief Minister called for a genuine single-window clearance system to address bureaucratic bottlenecks, particularly in obtaining clearances from forest and environmental boards that hinder manufacturing growth. He urged industry stakeholders to provide feedback for the upcoming budget, reaffirming the government’s commitment to fostering an industry-friendly policy environment.

Police solves theft case in Srinagar; accused arrested within hours

Srinagar, 21 Feb :- Srinagar Police has solved a theft case by arresting the accused person involved in the commission of crime and recovered stolen property from his possession.

Police Station Lal Bazar received a written complaint from a person namely Maqsood Ahmed Baba son of Ab Ahad Baba resident of Arzan Sahib Sopore A/P Jogi Wan Lal Bazar, stating therein that an unknown thief barged into his bread shop located in Jogiwan Lal bazar and stole cash amounting to Rs 34000 and some copper utensils.
Accordingly, a case vide FIR No. 07/2025 under relevant sections of law was registered in Police Station Lal bazar and investigation initiated.

After strenuous efforts and analysis of evidence, the Police team apprehended an accused person identified as Asif Majeed Parry son of Abdul Majeed Parry resident of Waltengoo Kund Kulgam within hours after the commitment of the crime.
During investigation, it came to fore that the thief had stolen DVR of CCTV cameras installed in a local mosque so as to evade any possibility of disclosure of his identity.

Upon his disclosure, stolen cash amount of ₹33731, DVR Of CCTV Camera of Masjid-e-Rahman, Jogiwan Lal bazar and copper utensils were also recovered.
Further investigation of the case is in progress.

Citizens are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the nearby Police unit or Dial-112 without delay so that prompt action against the culprits will be taken.

Disabled Man Suffocates to Death in Baramulla Blaze

Baramulla, Feb 21 : A 31-year-old disabled man died of suffocation after a massive fire engulfed a double-story residential house in Binnar Janbazpora, area of North Kashmir’s Baramulla, on friday morning.

An official told news agency JKNS that a massive fire at 4:31am engulfed a double-story residential house in Binnar Janbazpora.

In the incident 31-year-old disabled person identified as Zubair Siraj, son of Mohammad Siraj, died due to suffocation before arrival of fire and emergency service.

His body was later recovered from the attic portion by fire service personnel, the official said adding, authorities have taken cognizance of the incident. (JKNS)

Policeman among three persons killed in road accidents in Jammu, Udhampur

Jammu — Three persons, including a policeman, travelling on two motorcycles were killed in separate incidents in Jammu and Udhampur districts, officials said on Thursday.

Selection grade constable Manpreet Singh, who was in his early 30s, lost his life when an electric bus hit his motorcycle at Gadigarh in Jammu on Thursday, the officials said.

The bus driver has been arrested and the vehicle has been seized, they said.

Late on Wednesday night, two youths named Sushant Sharma and Vijay Kumar were killed after an unidentified vehicle hit their motorcycle near Khoon in the Majalta area of Udhampur district, the officials said.

Sharma was driving the two-wheeler, they said, adding that a hunt is on to identify and arrest the erring driver.

Meanwhile, two persons were injured when their vehicle skidded off the road and plunged into a gorge near Nachlana in Ramban district on Thursday afternoon.

Rescuers evacuated the injured to a nearby hospital where their condition is stated to be stable, the officials said. — (PTI)

SKIMS MC gets “THOTA” License

 

Srinagar 20 Feb, 2025:  Department of Ophthalmology, SKIMS Medical College achieves a major milestone by getting THOTA (The Human Organ Transplant Act) License for undertaking corneal Transplant Surgeries in blind patients. The blind patients impacted by various corneal diseases will be highly benefited and will be rendered seamless services.

Head of the Department of Ophthalmology SKIMS Medical College in his remarks said that they express their gratitude  to the Director, SKIMS/ Principal SKIMS Medical College Bemina Prof. (Dr) Mohd Ashraf Ganie, for his tireless efforts and to facilitate the process.  This will undoubtedly go a long way in mitigating the sufferings of poor blind patients. The corneal surgeries have a high successful rate and this is a big achievement for the department where such patients will now be treated successfully, he added.
The Department will start the Corneal Transplantation Surgeries soon under the supervision of experts including HOD Ophthalmology Prof (Dr) Sheikh Sajjad Ahmad along with the supportive Faculty members Prof (Dr) Imtiyaz Ahmad, Dr Nusrat Shaheen  and Dr Wasim Rashid .
It is pertinent to mention here that, It is mandatory for any hospital/ Department dealing with human organ transplant to have a License to conduct these procedures. The License is granted based on availability of trained faculty and high end infrastructure.

Besides offering Post-Graduate courses since 2013 , it is one of the major clinical departments offering tertiary care in sub-specialties of Cataract , Glaucoma ,Oculoplasty , Strabismus and Vitreo-retina . The department also runs state of the art research lab which is well equipped with various diagnostic and therapeutic modalities like OCT , FFA , VFA , A-Scan ocular untrasonography , B-Scan ocular ultrasonography , Optical Biometery , Green Laser , Diode Laser and Corneal Topography . The department also started Collagen Cross linking since 2024 for patients suffering from Keratoconus after installing a high end C3R laser machine for the first time in any Government institution of the UT.

Anantnag Police Attaches Property Worth ₹1 Crore Under NDPS Act

In a decisive action against Drug trafficking and its financial networks, Anantnag Police has attached a double-storey under-construction residential house belonging to Abdul Majeed Bhat, son-in-law of Mohammad Ahsan Ganaie, resident of Cheenigund, Srigufwara. The property, spread over 1 Kanal of land and valued at ₹1 crore, has been attached under Section 68-F of the NDPS Act, as it has been linked to proceeds from drug trafficking.

The accused is involved in a major narcotics case registered under FIR No. 68/2021 at Police Station Srigufwara, wherein a substantial quantity of contraband substances was recovered.

This action highlights Anantnag Police’s firm commitment to combating the drug menace and dismantling the financial networks sustaining illegal narcotics trade. By taking stringent measures, the police aim to deter criminal activities and safeguard society from the devastating impact of drug abuse.

J&K Health Minister inaugurates Cath lab & Addional Block at GMC Anantnag

ANANTNAG, 20 Feb : In a highly significant development Honorable Cabinet Minister for Education, Health and Medical Education and Social Welfare of UT of Jammu and Kashmir Ms Sakeena Masood Itoo Visited GMC Anantnag to mark the beginning of a new Era. She Inaugurated Cathlab and Block A of MMABM Associated Hospital GMC Anantnag. This makes the Medical College in South Kashmir to be the first among the New Medical Colleges to get a dedicated Cathlab Inaugurated.

The Honourable Cabinet Minister Ms Sakeena Itoo inaugurated the Cathlab and Block A in the presence of Honorable MLAs of District Anantang ( Mr Abdul Majeed Bhat, Mr Peerzada Mohammad Syeed, Mr Reyaz Ahmad Khan, Mr Altaf Ahmad Wani, Mr Zafar Ali Khatana), Principal GMC Anantnag Prof. Dr Rukhsana Najeeb, Director Coordinator of New Medical Colleges and Director Family Welfare, MCH and Immunisation Dr Mushtaq Ahmad Rather, CMO Anantang Dr M Y Zagoo, Medical Superintendent MMABM Associated Hospital Dr Arshad Hussain, Heads of Various department of GMC Anantnag,, other officials from health and medical education department , concerned Engineering department officials, Desk officers and other staff.
