Mehbooba Mufti slams CM Omar for ‘silence’ on land acquisition, orchardists’ concerns

Bijbehara, Jan 07 : People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president and former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, accusing him of remaining silent on issues that directly affect common people, particularly land acquisition and the concerns of orchardists.

Speaking on the death anniversary of her father and former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed in Bijbhehara, Mehbooba Mufti, said that instead of solving public issues, Omar Abdullah is busy speaking only against the PDP.

“He has an absolute majority, and his party has members in both the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha, yet he chooses silence on issues that hurt the poor,” she said

She further claimed that Omar Abdullah does not understand the emotional and economic value of orchards and land that belongs to ordinary Kashmiris. “He doesn’t know what an orchard or a piece of land means to a poor family. That is why he is mute on these issues and refuses to speak for the people whose livelihoods are at stake,” she said.

Mehbooba Mufti also said that the unemployment rate and alienation among the people of J&K has reached a level that a doctor from Pulwama killed himself and some innocents in Delhi, yet Omar Abdullah government is silent on burning issues in J&K.

She also urged the government to prioritise employment for local youth before acquiring land for railway and other major infrastructure projects in Kashmir, saying development cannot come at the cost of people’s livelihoods and dignity.

She said that land is the only source of survival for thousands of families in Kashmir, especially orchardists and small farmers, and any decision to take land must be accompanied by concrete assurances of jobs and rehabilitation for affected locals.

“Before taking even an inch of land for a railway or any other project, the government must ensure that all unemployed youth and every affected family get jobs. Land here is not just property; it is a livelihood, identity and a survival for poor families,” she said.

Omar Abdullah directs Health Minister to adjust SMVD students in nearby colleges

0

Jammu, Jan 7, KNT: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday held the Sangharsh Samiti responsible for what he described as the destruction of the dreams of aspiring doctors following the cancellation of admissions at the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Medical College in Reasi.

Talking to reporters, Omar Abdullah said he has instructed the Health Minister to ensure that students who were admitted to the medical college are accommodated in institutions closer to their homes to minimise academic and personal disruption.

“I have told the Health Minister to get these students adjusted in medical colleges close to their homes,” he said.

The Chief Minister as per the news agency Kashmir News Trust criticized the celebrations held by the Sangharsh Samiti, calling them insensitive and unjustified. “What kind of celebrations are these? Across India, people struggle and agitate for the establishment of medical colleges. Here in Jammu, protests were organised to shut down a medical college,” he said.

He accused the agitators of playing with the careers of students who had secured admission after clearing competitive examinations. “You have played with the careers of students. If you are content with this, then you may as well burst crackers,” he said.

Omar Abdullah rejected claims that the admissions had harmed Jammu’s interests, stating that the situation would have balanced out over time. “This year, over 40 students got admission from Kashmir. Next year, students from Jammu would have got admission. That is how merit-based systems work,” he said.

He said targeting students and institutions undermines the future of medical education and healthcare in the region. “Instead of strengthening institutions, such actions weaken them and hurt young people who have done nothing wrong,” he added. [KNT]

Jammu, Jan 6, KNT: Visibly furious, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday came down heavily on the BJP and the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Sangharsh Samiti over protests against MBBS admissions at the SMVD Institute of Medical Excellence, asserting that the students admitted to the institution have qualified purely on merit and not due to any favour.

Reacting sharply to the protests in Jammu, Omar said the agitation was unjustified and dangerous. “Protest for what? These students have earned their medical seats through hard work. Nobody has done them any favour,” he said. He added that if the protesters do not want those students to study at the institute, they should be accommodated elsewhere. “Given the prevailing situation, I do not think those students would want to continue their education in such an environment,” he remarked.

Speaking as a parent, Omar said he would never prefer his child to study at an institution where politics and hostility dominate academic life. He asked the Government of India and the Health Ministry to shift the students to other medical colleges, stating that education cannot be allowed to suffer due to political and religious agendas.

“We will not allow students to study at a place where politics is being played. Shut down that medical college. It does not deserve to be opened. We do not need such a medical college,” the Chief Minister said in an unusually hard toned attack.

Turning his guns on the BJP, Omar accused the party of creating chaos by turning Ladakh into a Union Territory and warned against repeating the same experiment in Jammu. “They could not handle Ladakh and now they want to destroy Jammu. Do whatever you want, but please do not destroy Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.

Omar as per the news agency Kashmir News Trust said the BJP views every issue through the prism of religion, alleging that education, sports and health are also being communalized. “They have no agenda, so now they want to separate Jammu. Everywhere they bring religion,” he said.

On the issue of reservation, Omar told reporters to seek answers from the Lieutenant Governor. “Go to the LG’s house and ask him what happened to the Cabinet Sub Committee report. We submitted it. Now it is up to the LG,” he said.

The Chief Minister described restoration of full statehood as a major challenge, saying even holding the budget session is not easy under the present circumstances. He declined to comment on the regularization of daily wagers, stating that it would be premature to speculate on what would be discussed in the budget session.

Omar also defended Bangladesh star cricketer Mustafizur Rehman, saying he had nothing to do with politics and that his removal from IPL was not desired by the team but was forced by circumstances. Taking a swipe at international politics, Omar said that if anyone had grievances with Bangladesh, they should take them up at the appropriate level and not drag individuals into political controversies. [KNT]
