0

Budgam, Dec 15, KNT: A forest fire broke out on Monday evening in the Nawroz Baba area of Khag, in Central Kashmir’s Budgam district, triggering concern among locals after flames were spotted in Compartment S 29 of the Khag Block.

Officials said Fire and Emergency Services teams, supported by Khag Police, rushed to the spot immediately after receiving information about the incident.

Forest officials, including the Range Officer Beerwah and Ranger Officers of the Beerwah Forest Protection Force, reached the affected area to supervise the operation. Locals of Khag also joined the efforts, helping the teams restrict the fire from advancing deeper into the forest.

The coordinated response played a key role in containing the blaze. Firefighting teams worked continuously to bring the flames under control, and the operation was still underway when reports last came in.

Authorities have appealed to the public to remain cautious and avoid activities that may lead to forest fires. [KNT]

NIA chargesheets seven in Pahalgam attack case, names LeT/TRF as accused

0

Jammu, Dec 15, KNT: The National Investigation Agency on Monday filed a chargesheet against seven accused, including the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba and its offshoot The Resistance Front, in connection with the deadly Pahalgam attack that left 25 tourists and one local civilian dead.

Filed before the NIA Special Court in Jammu, the 1,597-page chargesheet lays out what the agency described as a detailed account of Pakistan-backed conspiracy, the roles of individual accused, and the supporting evidence collected during the investigation. The NIA has, for the first time in the case, chargesheeted the banned LeT/TRF as a legal entity for its alleged role in planning, facilitating, and executing the attack.

According to the agency, the attack involved religion-based targeted killings carried out by Pak-sponsored militants. The chargesheet names Pakistan-based handler Sajid Jatt as an accused and details his alleged role in coordinating the operation from across the border.

The chargesheet also names three Pakistani militants who were killed by Indian security forces during Operation Mahadev at Dachigam in Srinagar in July 2025, weeks after the Pahalgam attack. They have been identified as Faisal Jatt alias Suleman Shah, Habeeb Tahir alias Jibran, and Hamza Afghani.

The NIA said LeT/TRF and the four militants have been charged under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023, the Arms Act 1959, and the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act 1967. Penal provisions relating to waging war against India have also been invoked.

The agency said its investigation, spanning nearly eight months and involving scientific and technical analysis, traced the conspiracy in case RC-02/2025/NIA/JMU to Pakistan, which it accused of persistently sponsoring militancy against India.

Two local accused, Parvaiz Ahmad and Bashir Ahmad Jothatd, who were arrested by the NIA on June 22, 2025, for allegedly harbouring militants, have also been chargesheeted. During interrogation, the NIA said, the duo disclosed the identities of the three armed militants involved in the attack and confirmed that they were Pakistani nationals affiliated with the proscribed LeT outfit.

The NIA said further investigation in the case is continuing to identify additional links and facilitators involved in the attack. [KNT]

J&K Govt Terminates Services of 103 Firemen Appointees Over Recruitment Scam

0

Srinagar, Dec 15, KNT: The Jammu and Kashmir government on Monday terminated the services of 103 appointees in the Fire and Emergency Services Department after an official enquiry and Anti-Corruption Bureau investigation established that their recruitment was illegal and fraudulently manipulated.

According to Government Order No. 608-Home of 2025, issued by the Home Department, the appointments made during the 2020 recruitment process for Firemen and Fireman Drivers were declared illegal, void ab initio, and cancelled with immediate effect .

The action follows the findings of an Enquiry Committee constituted in December 2022, which examined allegations of serious irregularities in the selection process. The committee recommended a criminal investigation after detecting evidence of paper leakage, manipulation of results, and tampering with official records.

Subsequent investigation by the Anti-Corruption Bureau, Jammu and Kashmir, led to the registration of FIR No. 01/2025 on January 2, 2025. The ACB, in its verification and investigation reports, confirmed large-scale tampering of OMR answer sheets, fabrication of scanned answer images, manipulation of merit lists, and alteration of digital evidence. The probe established that at least 106 candidates were awarded marks far in excess of what they had actually secured.

The government order as per the news agency Kashmir News Trust notes that the appointments were secured through criminal conspiracy and fraudulent means, rendering them legally unsustainable. It further states that constitutional protections under Article 311 are not applicable in cases where appointments are illegal from inception, citing multiple judgments of the Supreme Court and the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

Of the 106 candidates identified as illegally selected, appointments of three individuals had already been cancelled earlier by the Fire and Emergency Services Directorate for failing to meet mandatory appointment formalities. The remaining 103 were terminated through the present order.

The government held that continuation of such appointments would perpetuate illegality, undermine public trust, and compromise the sanctity of the recruitment process. All terminated individuals have been directed to cease association with the department from the date of issuance of the order.

The list of terminated appointees, includes candidates from multiple districts across Kashmir and Jammu divisions. The order has been issued with the approval of the Lieutenant Governor and signed by the Principal Secretary to the Government, Home Department. [KNT]

Eggs in the Hot Seat: Debunking Myths While Spotlighting the Silent Killer in Your Snack Drawer

Srinagar , December 14, 2025 – In recent weeks, social media has buzzed with claims that eggs could be carcinogenic, sparking debates and even leading to accusations against brands like Eggoz for using banned chemicals. But as experts scramble to set the record straight, a larger question looms: Why the uproar over eggs when ultra-processed snacks like potato chips and other everyday indulgences pack a proven punch of cancer-causing compounds, yet barely raise an eyebrow?

The egg controversy stems from a mix of old studies and fresh concerns—as per reports in the Kashmir Leader Magazine. A 2010 multisite case-control study found an association between higher egg consumption and increased risk for several cancers, prompting calls for more research. Similarly, high-temperature frying of eggs can produce carcinogenic chemicals, potentially linking to bladder cancer risks. Even a vintage 1965 study in mice suggested both egg whites and yolks might harbor carcinogenic potential. However, major health bodies like Cancer Research UK emphasize there’s no strong evidence classifying eggs as carcinogenic overall. “Eating eggs is unlikely to cause cancer,” they affirm, highlighting their nutrient density—packed with protein, vitamins, and healthy fats—when consumed in moderation.

Orthopedic surgeons and nutritionists have weighed in too, dismissing viral claims as overblown. Eggs from reputable sources, free of contaminants, remain a wholesome staple for many diets. Yet, the selective outrage feels misplaced when you consider the elephant—or rather, the crinkly bag—in the room: processed snacks.

Enter acrylamide, the sneaky villain lurking in your favorite potato chips, French fries, and even coffee. Formed when starchy foods are cooked at high temperatures (think frying, baking, or roasting), this chemical is classified by the European Commission as a Category 1B carcinogen and mutagen. The American Cancer Society warns that limiting high-acrylamide foods like potato chips could reduce exposure, as lab studies show it causes cancer in animals at levels far exceeding typical human intake—but human risks are still under scrutiny—as per reports in the Kashmir Leader Magazine. A 2025 study using advanced LC-MS/MS detection revealed elevated cancer risks for children from acrylamide in potato chips, with potential non-neoplastic effects in those under 10.

The numbers are stark. Daily acrylamide intake from potato and corn chips can be 7–40 times higher than the World Health Organization’s risk threshold for carcinogenesis. And it’s not just chips—ultra-processed foods (UPFs) like flavored crisps, instant noodles, and sugary cereals dominate modern diets, linked to a 31% higher mortality rate over 19 years in heavy consumers. These snacks fuel obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and yes, cancer, with ties to 32 adverse health outcomes. A 2025 review even mapped mechanistic pathways showing UPFs’ role in cancer development through inflammation, gut disruption, and oxidative stress.

“While eggs get villainized based on shaky correlations, we’re sleepwalking past the ultra-processed foods that form the backbone of too many pantries,” says Dr. Elena Vasquez, a nutrition epidemiologist at Stanford Medicine. The British Heart Foundation echoes this, noting UPFs’ high salt, sugar, and fat content crowd out nutrient-rich foods, amplifying risks.

So, why the silence? Marketing magic plays a role—chips are pitched as “fun” and “convenient,” while eggs evoke farm-fresh wholesomeness (until a scandal hits). But awareness is shifting. Health advocates urge simple swaps: Bake your own veggie chips at lower temps to slash acrylamide, opt for air-popped popcorn over packaged varieties, and choose whole foods like eggs or nuts for snacks.

As we peel back the layers of food myths, let’s redirect the spotlight. Eggs might crack under scrutiny, but it’s time to crunch down on the real threats in our chip aisles. Your body—and future self—will thank you. For personalized advice, consult a dietitian, and check labels for acrylamide hotspots. Stay informed, snack smarter.

Illegal Brick Kilns Razed in Budgam’s Chadoora Amid Crackdown on Violation

0

Srinagar, Dec 13, KNT: District administration on Saturday demolished three illegal brick kilns operating in the Nowbugh area of Chadoora in central Kashmir’s Budgam district, officials said.

The action was taken after it was found that the brick kilns were functioning without mandatory permissions and in violation of prescribed regulatory and environmental norms. Officials said all legal verifications and due formalities were completed before proceeding with the demolition.

According to the authorities, the demolition drive was aimed at curbing unauthorized industrial activity, preventing environmental degradation, protecting fertile agricultural land, and safeguarding public health. Illegal brick kilns, officials noted, contribute to air pollution and cause long-term damage to soil quality.

The operation was carried out in a transparent manner in the presence of concerned officials. Locals of the area welcomed the move, stating that such kilns often lead to severe pollution, adversely affect crops, and pose health risks, particularly to children and the elderly.

The administration reiterated that strict action will continue against all unauthorized structures and industrial units operating in violation of law. Officials also issued a clear warning to violators, urging them to remove illegal structures on their own or face similar enforcement measures.

The district administration reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the rule of law, maintaining ecological balance, and protecting public interest across the region. [KNT]

Light Snow to Blanket Kashmir

0

Srinagar, December 13, 2025 – As winter tightens its grip on the picturesque valleys of Jammu and Kashmir, the Regional Meteorological Centre has forecasted light snowfall in the higher reaches of the region from today until December 17, bringing a touch of white magic to the snow-capped peaks.

According to the latest advisory, skies over Jammu and Kashmir will remain partly to generally cloudy from December 13 through 17, with very light snowfall expected at isolated higher-altitude spots in north and central Kashmir, particularly during late-night and early-morning hours—as per reports in the Kashmir Leader Magazine. This gentle wintry shower is anticipated to add to the scenic allure of popular destinations like Gulmarg and Sonamarg, though it is unlikely to cause major disruptions to travel or daily life.

Looking ahead, the weather pattern suggests a brief respite from precipitation. Conditions are expected to stay partly to generally cloudy on December 18 and 19, before a mild intensification on December 20 and 21. During this period, scattered light rain and snow could grace parts of the Kashmir division, with isolated light precipitation possible in the Jammu region, especially in the evenings—as per reports in the Kashmir Leader Magazine. From December 22 to 25, the forecast points to mostly partly cloudy skies, offering clearer views for locals and tourists alike.

The department has also warned of persistent shallow to moderate fog blanketing several areas in the Kashmir division and isolated pockets in Jammu during early mornings, which could reduce visibility and prompt caution for commuters and outdoor enthusiasts.

Current temperatures underscore the chill in the air. Srinagar dipped to a low of -2.9°C overnight, while hill stations like Pahalgam recorded -4.6°C, Kupwara -4.2°C, Pulwama and Shopian both at -5.2°C, and the formidable Zojila Pass plummeting to -18.0°C. In contrast, Jammu’s plains fared milder, with a minimum of 8.6°C, Katra at 9.5°C, Banihal 2.4°C, and Bhaderwah 1.4°C. Ladakh’s harsh winter continued unabated, with Leh at -7.0°C, Kargil -6.5°C, Drass -9.9°C, and Nyoma -12.8°C.

“We urge residents and visitors in high-altitude and fog-prone areas to stay prepared for the cold and any sudden visibility dips,” an official from the Meteorological Department stated. “Our teams are monitoring developments closely and will issue updates as needed to ensure safety amid the evolving winter conditions.”

This forecast comes at an opportune time for winter sports enthusiasts, as the light snow could enhance skiing conditions in Gulmarg, Kashmir’s premier ski resort. However, authorities advise checking road updates, especially for routes to higher elevations, and packing essentials like warm clothing and fog lights.

As Jammu and Kashmir embraces the season’s first significant flurries, the region prepares for a symphony of snow-dusted landscapes that define its timeless beauty. Stay tuned for real-time updates from the MeT department.

Holiday Calendar 2026: LG Sinha Again Skips Martyrs’ Day, Sheikh Abdullah’s Birth Anniversary

0

Srinagar, Dec 13, KDC: The Lieutenant Governor–led Jammu and Kashmir administration has notified the official holiday calendar for the year 2026, once again omitting July 13 (Martyrs’ Day) and December 5 (birth anniversary of Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah), keeping alive a politically sensitive issue that has repeatedly strained relations between the elected government and the Lok Bhavan.

The holiday list was issued by the General Administration Department through Government Order No. 1894-JK(GAD) of 2025, dated December 12, and covers holidays to be observed in government offices and educational institutions across Jammu and Kashmir during 2026 . According to Kashmir Dot Com, while the calendar includes national holidays, religious festivals, Accession Day and the birth anniversary of Maharaja Hari Singh, the continued exclusion of July 13 and Sheikh Abdullah’s birthday marks a continuation of the policy followed since August 2019.

Both dates were earlier observed as gazetted holidays in the erstwhile state. July 13 commemorates the killing of 22 Kashmiris during protests outside Srinagar Central Jail in 1931, an event long regarded as a defining moment in Kashmir’s political history. December 5 marks the birth anniversary of Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, founder of the National Conference and the region’s first Prime Minister. These holidays were removed from the official calendar after the reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir into a Union Territory.

The issue resurfaced sharply earlier this year on July 13, 2025, when Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, along with cabinet ministers, MLAs and party leaders, attempted to visit the Martyrs’ Graveyard at Naqshband Sahib in Srinagar to pay tributes. The administration sealed the graveyard and stopped the CM’s convoy, citing security considerations. The incident triggered a political storm, with Omar Abdullah describing it as unprecedented for an elected government to be prevented from marking a historically observed day.

The following day, July 14, the Chief Minister reiterated that Martyrs’ Day was not merely a matter of a holiday but one of historical memory and democratic tradition. Political parties, particularly the National Conference, accused the administration of attempting to erase Kashmir’s political past through administrative decisions, while the LG administration maintained that decisions on holidays were taken within the existing legal and security framework.

After assuming office, the CM-led J&K government formally sent a proposal to the Lieutenant Governor and the Ministry of Home Affairs, seeking the restoration of both July 13 as Martyrs’ Day and December 5 as Sheikh Abdullah’s birth anniversary in the official holiday calendar. The proposal, according to ruling party, argued for preserving historical continuity and public sentiment, but it has not been approved so far.

The issuance of the 2026 holiday calendar without any change indicates that the LG administration has chosen to maintain the status quo. (KDC)

Power System Collapsing Due to Underreported Load, Not Smart Meters: Omar Abdullah

0

Srinagar, Dec 13, KNT: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday expressed strong displeasure over persistent criticism surrounding electricity bills, smart meters and power supply, asserting that the real cause of system failures lies in underreporting of actual power consumption and widespread misuse of electricity.

Addressing a press conference at the ski resort Gulmarg, where he inaugurated several development projects, the Chief Minister said the power infrastructure was being overstretched due to dishonest disclosure of electricity load by consumers.

“When agreements are made, people show a requirement of four bulbs, but after that, they start using ten heaters. Naturally, the system will collapse,” Omar Abdullah said, visibly angry while responding to questions on the power situation.

He stressed that the government was not opposed to supplying electricity according to demand, but said transparency was essential. “Reveal your load honestly. Based on that, we will install transformers, and those transformers will not get damaged,” he said.

The Chief Minister pointed out that transformer failures and frequent outages were largely absent in areas where smart meters had been installed. “Overloading on transformers is not happening where meters are in place. System failure is clearly visible in areas where agreements are made on false load declarations,” he added.

Omar Abdullah also flagged serious financial implications, stating that the power department was operating under heavy losses. “We are unable to supply as much electricity as people need because we do not get the revenue for the electricity that is actually being consumed. We are running at a loss,” he said.

He maintained that smart metering was aimed at stabilising the power system, ensuring fair billing, and improving supply rather than harassing consumers. The Chief Minister reiterated that without realistic load assessment and revenue recovery, sustaining an uninterrupted power supply during harsh winters would remain a challenge. [KNT]
