Hailstorm damages apple blossoms and crops in Budgam villages

0

Budgam, March 16, KNT: A sudden hailstorm struck Kanidajan and nearby villages in the Pakherpora area of central Kashmir’s Budgam district on Monday late afternoon, damaging standing crops and apple blossoms and raising concerns among farmers about potential losses to the upcoming harvest.

Locals said the hailstorm lasted only a short time but was intense enough to affect orchards and agricultural fields across parts of the area.

Farmers said the hailstones hit apple trees at a crucial stage of the season when blossoms are in full bloom, knocking down flowers in several orchards.

The apple blossom stage is considered critical for fruit development, and damage during this period can affect the size and quantity of the harvest later in the year.

Local farmers said they feared the hailstorm could reduce production if the damage proves widespread.

“Hailstones fell suddenly and many blossoms were knocked down. We are worried this may affect the apple crop this year,” a local orchard owner said.

Apart from apple orchards, some seasonal crops and vegetables grown in nearby fields were also reported to have been affected.

Budgam district, like several other parts of the Kashmir Valley, has a significant number of apple orchards that contribute to the region’s horticulture sector.

Affected farmers have urged the Horticulture Department and the local administration to conduct an immediate assessment of the damage in the affected villages.

They said officials should visit the orchards and agricultural fields to evaluate the losses and ensure that farmers receive timely assistance if the damage is confirmed. [KNT]

Thousands Offer Jumat-ul-Wida Prayers Across Kashmir at Major Shrines and Mosques

0

Srinagar, March 13, KNT: Large numbers of devotees gathered at shrines and mosques across Kashmir on Friday to offer special congregational prayers on the occasion of Jumat-ul-Wida, the last Friday of the holy month of Ramadan.

Major religious sites across the Valley witnessed significant gatherings as worshippers assembled to participate in the prayers, seeking blessings and offering supplications during the final days of the fasting month.

Jumat-ul-Wida holds deep spiritual significance for Muslims and traditionally draws large congregations at mosques and shrines, as believers intensify prayers and acts of devotion ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.

Thousands of devotees were seen offering prayers at the Hazratbal shrine in Srinagar, one of the most revered religious sites in Kashmir. The shrine, located on the banks of Dal Lake, witnessed a steady stream of worshippers since morning.

Similar scenes were reported from Jinab Sahib in Soura, Srinagar, where devotees gathered in large numbers to participate in the special Friday prayers.

In south Kashmir’s Kulgam district, the Ziyarat Sharief of Hazrat Mir Syed Hussain Simnani (RA) also witnessed large congregations as worshippers assembled to mark the occasion with prayers and supplications.

The historic Ziyarat Kailashpora shrine in Srinagar’s Kailashpora locality also saw devotees gathering to observe the last Friday prayers of Ramadan.

Congregations were also reported from Kabamarg in Anantnag district where residents and devotees assembled to offer the special prayers.

In Shopian district, a large number of worshippers gathered at Jamia Masjid Shopian to participate in the congregational prayers.

Officials said adequate arrangements were made at several places to facilitate the smooth conduct of prayers and manage the movement of devotees.

“Large congregations were witnessed at several shrines and mosques across Kashmir as people offered Jumat-ul-Wida prayers,” officials said.

Many worshippers said the day holds special importance as it comes during the concluding days of Ramadan.

“We prayed for peace, prosperity and the well-being of the people,” said a devotee who participated in the prayers in Srinagar.

Religious scholars say Jumat-ul-Wida is one of the most spiritually significant congregational prayers of Ramadan, observed during the final phase of the holy month when believers increase their prayers and charitable acts.

Large gatherings at shrines and mosques across Kashmir during Ramadan, particularly on the last Friday, have long been a tradition reflecting the strong religious observance associated with the occasion. [KNT]

US Army Drone Theft at Fort Campbell Sparks Security Concerns Amid Iran Tensions

0

March 13, 2026 — The disappearance of four advanced US military drones from Fort Campbell, Kentucky, in November 2025 has drawn renewed attention this week after the Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID) publicly released suspect images, offered a $5,000 reward, and then quickly identified two individuals with authorized base access. The incident — involving compact, AI-powered Skydio X10D drone systems — has fueled online speculation about a potential “false flag” operation linked to escalating US-Iran tensions, though mainstream reporting and official statements describe it as a targeted internal theft with no public safety threat.

The Theft: What Happened

The four Skydio X10D drone systems (compact quadcopters equipped with advanced autonomy, high-resolution cameras, and AI-enabled navigation) were last confirmed present on the morning of November 21, 2025, inside a locked storage area of Building 6955 at the 326th Division Engineer Battalion, Fort Campbell. Sometime between November 21 and 24, unknown individuals defeated the locks on the storage cages and removed the drones.

The systems are part of the US Army’s tactical small unmanned aircraft system (sUAS) inventory, valued for reconnaissance, surveillance, and rapid-response missions. Their compact size made them relatively easy to transport once the storage was breached.

Investigation Update (March 2026)

On or around March 9–10, 2026, Army CID went public:

  • Released security-camera stills of two individuals (one in a dark jacket and face covering, another in casual clothing) inside the building.
  • Offered up to $5,000 for information leading to arrest and conviction.
  • Within 48 hours, tips from the public allowed investigators to identify two suspects who had authorized access to both the installation and the building.

Fort Campbell Public Affairs and multiple local outlets (WSMV, FOX17, The Leaf-Chronicle) confirmed on March 12 that the theft was “targeted,” the suspects had legitimate base access, and there is no threat to the public. The drones’ current whereabouts remain unknown, but investigators believe they have credible leads on their location.

Timing Raises Eyebrows: Iran Drone Threat Warnings

The theft has drawn particular attention because it coincides with heightened US-Iran tensions. In February 2026, the FBI circulated an unverified intelligence bulletin to California law-enforcement agencies warning that Iran had “aspired” to launch drone attacks from an unidentified vessel off the US West Coast targeting unspecified sites in California — potentially in retaliation for US or Israeli strikes on Iranian targets.

The bulletin, first reported publicly in March 2026 by ABC News, Reuters, and others, stated the information was unverified and contained no specifics on timing, method, or exact targets. Nevertheless, it emerged amid active US-Iran conflict reporting, creating a charged backdrop for any missing US military drones.

Speculation vs. Official Narrative

Outlets such as The Cradle (a Beirut-based publication often critical of US and Israeli policy) published a post framing the theft as sparking “fears of a potential false flag against Iran.” The article highlighted the timing of the FBI bulletin and suggested the stolen drones could be used to stage an incident blamed on Tehran.

Mainstream US reporting — Military Times, DefenseScoop, FOX News, local Kentucky/Tennessee stations — has uniformly described the case as an inside-job theft by individuals with authorized access, not a sophisticated foreign espionage operation. Army officials have repeatedly emphasized there is “no threat to the public” and have not linked the theft to any foreign actor.

Current Status

  • Two suspects identified; investigation ongoing.
  • Drones still missing; reward remains active.
  • No evidence has been presented publicly connecting the theft to Iran or any foreign government.
  • Security at Fort Campbell and other US bases has been reviewed, though no broader alerts have been issued.

The story continues to develop. Army CID and Fort Campbell have asked anyone with information to contact them directly. While the incident highlights vulnerabilities in securing even advanced military equipment on domestic bases, official sources continue to treat it as a criminal matter rather than a national-security breach tied to foreign adversaries.

World Kidney Day: Expert Advises Early Checkups and Healthy Lifestyle to Protect Kidneys

0

Malik Faizan

Srinagar, March 12, KNT: A senior nephrologist on Thursday stressed the importance of early awareness and preventive care to protect kidney health, saying many kidney diseases can be avoided through timely medical consultation and healthy lifestyle practices.

Speaking on the occasion of World Kidney Day, Dr. Aijaz Arshid, Director of the Department of Nephrology at Ujala Cygnus Kashmir Super Specialty Hospital, said lack of awareness and neglect of early symptoms often leads to serious kidney complications.

He said kidney diseases are increasing globally but many cases can be prevented if people pay attention to their lifestyle, diet and medical conditions such as diabetes and hypertension.

Dr. Arshid said uncontrolled diabetes and high blood pressure are among the major causes of kidney damage and advised people suffering from these conditions to regularly consult doctors and keep their blood pressure and blood sugar levels under control.

“People should monitor their blood pressure regularly and take prescribed medication as advised by doctors,” he said while highlighting the importance of routine health check-ups.

He also warned against the unregulated intake of medicines, saying excessive or unsupervised use of certain drugs can harm the kidneys.

“Medicines should not be taken in an uncontrolled manner without medical advice,” he said, adding that self-medication can increase the risk of kidney complications.

The nephrologist also emphasised the importance of maintaining a healthy body weight and avoiding obesity, which can contribute to kidney problems over time.

Dr. Arshid advised people to follow a balanced diet and avoid excessive protein intake, recommending moderate consumption of protein as part of a healthy diet.

He said maintaining proper hydration is also important and people should drink water regularly to support kidney function.

Highlighting early warning signs, Dr. Arshid said the presence of protein in urine can be an indicator of kidney damage and requires medical attention.

“If protein is detected in urine tests, patients should consult a doctor and take proper medication to prevent further complications,” he said.

He urged people to remain aware about kidney health and seek timely medical advice to detect and treat kidney diseases at an early stage. [KNT]
