Fruit-laden trucks to move towards Jammu today at 11 AM: IG Traffic

0

Srinagar: Inspector General of Police (Traffic), M. Suleman Choudhary, on Wednesday said that fruit-laden trucks will be allowed to proceed towards Jammu along the Srinagar-Jammu highway today at 11:00 AM.

Speaking to KNO, Choudhary said that heavy motor vehicles will be permitted to move towards Jammu. “Light motor vehicles should take the Mughal route. Our main priority is to clear fruit-laden trucks,” he stated, adding that they expect to clear most of the stranded trucks heading Jammu.

The IGP had said last evening that 2,800 trucks—mostly carrying fruit—had passed through the Mughal Road on Monday and Tuesday.

The ruling NC-led government has come under sharp criticism from fruit growers and Kashmir-based opposition parties, including the PC and PDP, for failing to ensure the unhindered movement of fruit-laden trucks to markets across the country.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has also faced backlash from various quarters for failing to widen and level a 300-metre stretch constructed at Tahard in Udhampur district, after the existing highway was buried under debris.

According to officials, the poor condition of this stretch is causing significant hindrances to the smooth movement of traffic along the highway.

Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways, Nitin Gadkari, chaired a high-level meeting on Tuesday to review the situation along the Srinagar-Jammu highway. (KNO)

NH Closure, Around 2,000 tonnes of apples dispatched to mandis via railway: Officials

0

Srinagar: Amid the prolonged closure of Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, the authorities on Wednesday said that around 2,000 tonnes of apples have been transported to outside mandis through railway from the Valley so far this season.

An official told KNO that since past week, 1,25,376 apple boxes have been dispatched by train, mostly to Delhi.

“From Anantnag Railway Station, 87,137 boxes were dispatched, while 38,239 boxes were transported from Budgam Railway Station,” he said.

Chief Area Manager Kashmir, Northern Railways, Saqib Yousuf said that from Anantnag, 350 tonnes, 650 tonnes and 376 tonnes of apples were already loaded and dispatched in separate consignments. “From Budgam around 600 tonnes have also been dispatched,” he said.

Pertinently, Kashmir produces over 70 per cent of India’s apples, with last year’s harvest recorded at 20.4 lakh metric tonnes.

However, the industry continues to remain at the mercy of the Srinagar-Jammu highway, which often faces frequent closures.

Last month, the heavy rains and landslides choked the highway for nearly two weeks, leaving truckloads of apples worth hundreds of crores stranded on the road, officials said. (KNO)
