67 students show symptoms of Chickenpox in Baramulla schools, authorities on alert

0

Srinagar: Panic has gripped several schools in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district after dozens of students reported symptoms of chickenpox, prompting health and education authorities to step in and monitor the situation closely.

According to officials, at least 67 students from three schools in the district have shown signs of the contagious disease.

Chief Education Officer (CEO) Baramulla, Peerzada Bashir Ahmad Shah, told KINS that 40 students at Turkpora, 23 students at Khonchipora, and three students at another school were found with chickenpox symptoms.

“Soon after the matter was brought to our notice, we informed the health department. Medical teams were deputed immediately, and they advised that students showing symptoms should be isolated at home while their class work remains suspended,” Shah said.

The CEO said that the education department is in constant touch with health authorities to ensure the situation does not worsen. “Those infected initially developed severe fever and then rashes in skin, but after medication the impact reduces,” he added.

Health officials have urged parents to remain vigilant and seek timely medical attention if their children display symptoms such as fever, rashes, or itching. They also stressed the need to avoid overcrowding in schools and to follow preventive measures to contain the outbreak.

Meanwhile, anxious parents and local residents have appealed to the health and education departments to intensify monitoring and provide adequate medical facilities in the affected areas. They fear the infection could spread further if not contained in time.

Chickenpox, a highly contagious viral disease, primarily affects children but can also pose complications in adults. Doctors have advised infected students to stay at home until fully recovered to prevent transmission.

Authorities said the situation is being closely monitored, and necessary steps will be taken to safeguard the health of students. (KINS)

Centre steps in to address highway havoc

Srinagar: Amid growing outrage over the deteriorating condition of the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari is likely to chair a high-level meeting on Tuesday afternoon to discuss the issue.

Sources told KNO that the meeting will be chaired by Gadkari and attended by top officials from the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

The meeting will also be joined via videoconferencing by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, his cabinet colleagues, senior bureaucrats, and officials from various central agencies in Jammu & Kashmir.

On Monday, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah spoke to Gadkari, seeking his intervention to address the worsening condition of the highway.

The CM had also slammed the Union Government, saying they should handover the highway to J&K Government if they cannot maintain it.

The ruling NC-led government has come under sharp criticism from fruit growers as well as from Kashmir-based opposition parties, including the PC and PDP, for failing to ensure the unhindered movement of fruit-laden trucks to markets across the country.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has also faced criticism from various quarters for failing to widen and level a 300-metre stretch constructed at Tahard in Udhampur district, after the existing highway was buried under debris.

According to officials, the poor condition of this stretch is causing significant hindrances to the smooth movement of traffic along the highway. (KNO)

Addressing the closing ceremony of Jashn-e-Dal, a Water Sports event organized by Jammu Kashmir Police, at Dal Lake, here, LG Sinha, according to KNO said, “J&K Police have set an example not seen anywhere else in the country. Besides maintaining law, and order the force is also mentoring the younger generation, particularly through sports.”

“On one hand, J&K Police is ensuring the safety of people, and on the other, it is acting as a guardian to youth. The force has successfully channelized the energies of young people by mentoring them in sports and other positive fields,” the LG said, adding, “Jammu Kashmir Police’s proactive engagement with communities and empowerment of youth is laudable. It has been working with integrity and dedication to protect the nation’s internal security.”

The Lieutenant Governor congratulated the Jammu Kashmir Police for playing a significant role in nation-building, upholding rule of law, ensuring public safety and order and fighting terrorism.

He also commended the J&K Police for organising the annual sporting tournament at iconic Dal Lake with the main objective of youth engagement and to foster unity, harmony and camaraderie among athletes.

He said, “Events like Jashn-e-Dal, Pedal for Peace, and various marathons, football, and cricket tournaments are more than just sports activities. Each tournament is a symbol of a new and positive chapter for our youth.”

Highlighting the unifying role of games, LG Sinha said sports hold immense power in bringing people together and fostering harmony in society.

He called upon young athletes to remain committed to keeping the national flag flying high, adding that sportspersons are role models and must inspire others through their discipline and dedication.

Underscoring the importance of preserving natural resources, LG Sinha urged citizens, especially the younger generation, to take a pledge for safeguarding rivers and lakes. “As we move towards celebrating 100 years of independence in 2047, we must envision a future where our lakes and water bodies remain clean and thriving,” he said.

The Lieutenant Governor also called upon the youth to lead the community service campaign during the ‘Sewa Parv’ starting from September 17th, 2025.

“If Centre can’t restore Highway, Hand it over to us, We’ll do it”: CM Omar Abdullah

0

Srinagar: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday expressed strong displeasure over the prolonged closure of the Srinagar–Jammu National Highway, stressing that the Centre has failed to ensure its restoration.

Speaking to media persons CM Omar as per JKNS said, “The highway falls under the domain of the central government, and if they can’t handle this then let them hand it over to us.”

“We wait patiently, but if it were under my control, I would have reopened it with a team of engineers,” Abdullah said.

He said repeated assurances of reopening had yielded nothing, forcing him to write to and seek a meeting with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.

CM Omar said that he was prepared to take full responsibility for the restoration if the project was handed over to the J&K administration.

At the same time, the Chief Minister urged Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to establish a full-fledged cargo trade facility, citing the immense difficulties faced by fruit growers.

“The single train service flagged off ceremonially is not enough to handle the huge volume of fruit consignments. Continued service is crucial until the highway reopens,” Omar stressed. (JKNS)

300-metre stretch in Udhampur brings Kashmir’s highway to a standstill

0

Srinagar: At the centre of the ongoing highway crisis is a 300-metre-long, narrow, and severely uneven muddy stretch located between Tharad and Balli Nallah in Udhampur district.

Officials said that the stretch was built by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) earlier this month after the existing road was buried under debris from a mountain that collapsed onto the highway, and a portion of it was washed away by rains.

“This stretch is responsible for the ongoing crisis. The road is so narrow that only one vehicle can pass through at a time. It should be widened to allow two vehicles to ply simultaneously,” they said, adding that the surface is so uneven that vehicles struggle to pass and often get stuck in the mud.

Multiple videos in possession of KNO show that vehicles are struggling to navigate this stretch and are getting stuck in the muck.

A group of fruit growers accused the National Highways Authority of India of failing to increase the road’s width and level its surface.

“We appeal to Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to intervene and ensure that NHAI undertakes steps to widen the road and smoothen its surface,” they said.

Officials confirmed that thousands of vehicles have been stuck on the highway over the past few days.

“On a normal day during peak fruit season, around 10000 vehicles, including 1000 apple trucks, ply on the highway. But due to the current road conditions, only 700 to 1000 vehicles are able to move through. Besides, around 2500 vehicles are diverted via Mughal Road. This results in a daily backlog of nearly 6,000 vehicles per day,” they said. (KNO)
