Heavy rains lash Jammu & south Kashmir, Gradual improvement expected by afternoon: MeT

Srinagar: The Meteorological Centre Srinagar on Wednesday issued a fresh weather forecast for Jammu and Kashmir, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of the Union Territory, particularly over districts of Jammu Division and South Kashmir, till late afternoon today.

However, as per KINS the weather department said that a gradual improvement is expected thereafter.

According to the MeT Centre Srinagar, the weather on 3rd September will remain generally cloudy with light to moderate rain and thundershowers at many places. Some districts of Jammu Division are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, while South Kashmir may experience moderate to heavy showers.

From 4th to 7th September, the weather office has predicted brief spells of rain and thundershowers at a few places, with moderate showers expected over isolated areas of Jammu Division. A fresh spell of moderate rainfall is also likely between the late night of 8th September and the morning of 9th September, before weather conditions improve and remain relatively stable till the evening of 11th September.

The MeT department has also issued an advisory urging people to remain cautious amid the possibility of: Heavy to very heavy rainfall in some districts.Flash floods, landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones in vulnerable areas.

Significant rise in water levels of Jhelum, Tawi, and other local rivers and tributaries, which could trigger flooding and waterlogging in low-lying areas.

Authorities have urged residents to stay away from water bodies, river embankments, and loose structures, while travelers on hilly routes have been advised to remain alert.

“People are requested to stay updated and follow weather advisories closely for their safety,” the advisory added. (KINS)

Mother, daughter killed as house wall collapses in Sunderbani

Srinagar: A woman and her daughter were killed after a wall of their house collapsed due to heavy rains in the Sunderbani area of Rajouri district during the intervening night of September 2 and 3, officials said.

Officials told KNO that incessant rains in the region caused the wall to collapse, trapping the two under the debris.

Rescue teams, along with police, rushed to the spot soon after the incident and recovered the bodies.

The deceased have been identified as Sita Devi, wife of Rattan Lal, and her daughter Sonia Rattan Lal, residents of Tanda Kangri in Sunderbani.

Meanwhile, authorities have urged residents to exercise caution as continuous rainfall has heightened the risk of damage to structures in the area. (KNO)

Jammu- Srinagar National Highway, Mughal, SSG, Sinthan roads closed amid heavy rains, landslides

Srinagar: The Jammu–Srinagar National Highway, the Valley’s vital surface link to the rest of the country, remained shut on Wednesday following heavy rains that triggered mudslides, landslides, and shooting stones at multiple stretches, particularly in the Ramban and Banihal sectors.

Traffic police officials told KINS that continuous rainfall has made restoration work unsafe, compelling authorities to suspend vehicular traffic for the safety of commuters.

“Mudslides and shooting stones have been reported from several stretches. Our priority is the safety of travelers, and under such conditions, we cannot risk allowing traffic movement,” a senior traffic police officer said.

He advised people to avoid unnecessary journeys and to confirm the status of roads from official sources before traveling.

Alongside the national highway, the Mughal Road, Sinthan Road, and SSG Road have also been closed for traffic due to landslides and shooting stones.

The 250-km Srinagar–Jammu National Highway is the only all-weather road connecting the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has forecast heavy spells of rain in the coming hours, keeping officials and restoration teams on high alert. (KINS)

Continuous rainfall swells Vishow Nallah, danger mark surpassed

Srinagar: With water levels continuing to rise, the Vishow Nallah at Khudwani in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district crossed the danger mark on Wednesday, prompting authorities to begin evacuating people living nearby, officials said.

An official told KNO that the water level of the Vishow Nallah crossed both the flood declaration level and the danger mark this morning.

The official said that it continues to rain in south Kashmir, and the district administration, along with J&K Police, has rescued people living near the Nallah and shifted them to safer locations. (KNO)

KU, Cluster University postpone exams amid inclement weather conditions

Srinagar: In view of the prevailing inclement weather conditions, all examinations scheduled for Wednesday, September 3, 2025, by the University of Kashmir (KU) and Cluster University Srinagar (CUS) have been postponed.

Officials from the Cluster University Srinagar and the University of Kashmir, as per KNO, said that fresh dates for the postponed papers will be notified separately.

They said that all exams slated for Wednesday have also been deferred.

Earlier, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Anshul Garg, had ordered the closure of all schools and colleges across the Valley as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students and staff. (KNO)

Jhelum water level rising, situation under control: Flood & Irrigation Dept

Srinagar: The Flood and Irrigation Department on Wednesday said that the water level in river Jhelum is gradually increasing but the situation is currently under control.

Meanwhile, weather experts warned of a sharp rise with the possibility of crossing the danger mark.

As per the gauge readings at 7:00 AM today, recorded and available with KNO, Jhelum’s level at Sangam stood at 16.72 ft (against 21’ flood mark), Pampore at 2.64 m (against 4.5 m), Ram Munshi Bagh at 12.09 ft (against 18’), Asham at 7.63 ft (against 14’) and Wullar Lake at 1576.55 m.

Similarly, water levels in tributaries were recorded at Vishow Nallah Khudwani 8.24 m, Rambiyara Nallah Wachi 0.90 m, and Lidder Nallah Batkoot 1.67 m.

Officials also maintained that the situation is under constant monitoring. “Water level is rising but is being closely observed. At present, it remains under control,” a senior official from the Flood and Irrigation Department told KNO.

Meanwhile, independent weather forecaster Faizan Arif Keng cautioned that water levels at Sangam and Ram Munshi Bagh may surpass the flood declaration mark and even breach the danger level today. “A sharp rise is expected, and people must remain alert while taking early safety measures,” he said.

As a precautionary measure, all schools and colleges have been closed, while the Cluster University of Kashmir has postponed all its exams for today. (KNO)

Srinagar: In view of the prevailing inclement weather conditions, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Anshul Garg, on Wednesday ordered the closure of all schools and colleges across Kashmir division for today, September 3, 2025.

Garg told KNO, that the step has been taken purely as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students and staff.

Meanwhile, officials said the weather department has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall at several places across the Valley, which may lead to waterlogging, landslides and disruption in road connectivity.

Authorities have also appealed to the public to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel. (KNO)

Rising Waters in south Kashmir; Flood threat looms

Srinagar: The water level in Vishow Nallah is rising steadily amid relentless rains across the Kulgam belt, with officials warning it may cross both the Flood Declaration and Danger Marks within the next 4–8 hours.

Heavy downpours are expected to continue across South Kashmir till morning, heightening fears of possible inundation in low-lying areas.

Acknowledging public anxiety, Kashmir Weather said it is likely that water levels will breach the Flood Declaration mark. “How much further the levels will rise depends on overnight conditions and tomorrow’s weather.

A detailed update will be shared in the morning,” the advisory noted.

Flood Alert in Jammu region as Rivers cross danger marks

Srinagar: Authorities have issued a critical flood alert after water levels in major rivers surged alarmingly in parts of Jammu region.

The Tawi river in Udhampur swelled nearly eight feet in just 90 minutes, crossing the evacuation mark of 23.4 ft and touching 24.97 ft, officials confirmed.

According to latest assessments, it generally takes 4–6 hours for the flow to reach Jammu city, where the river is expected to cross the danger mark and may even approach the evacuation level within the next five hours. Residents have been urged to stay vigilant and prepared for any necessary action.

Meanwhile, the Chenab river at Akhnoor breached the danger mark late Monday night, flowing at 36.5 ft, well above the 35 ft danger level, while the evacuation threshold is 42 ft. Earlier, the river had crossed the flood alert level at 34 ft around 11 p.m.

In Reasi and adjoining Ramban areas, thunder cells developed around midnight, raising the risk of intense showers and even cloudbursts, weather experts warned.

Authorities have advised people in low-lying and vulnerable areas to remain on high alert as the situation remains critical.
