Death toll mounts to 41 after record rains in Jammu; Jhelum floods Srinagar, Anantnag

Jammu/Srinagar: After record rains wreaked havoc in Jammu and Kashmir over the past two days, the death toll in related incidents rose to 41, most of them victims of the landslide on a Vaishno Devi pilgrimage route, while there was some let-up in the showers on Wednesday, allowing relief efforts to pick up pace.

The water level in the swollen rivers across Jammu showed signs of receding from 11 AM, but the flood alert mark was breached by the Jhelum in Anantnag and Srinagar and water entered several residential and commercial areas.

Massive damage has been reported to public infrastructure, including several key bridges, private houses and commercial establishments, due to overflowing of water bodies and flash floods across the Union Territory, officials said, adding more than 10,000 people have been evacuated from low-lying flooded areas.

As torrential rains disrupted normal life, Education Minister Sakina Itoo announced that all educational institutes will remain closed across Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday in view of the inclement weather.

The Northern Railways ordered the cancellation of 58 trains to and from Jammu and Katra stations, while 64 trains were short-terminated or short-originated at various stations in the division.

Rail traffic, which was briefly restored on Wednesday morning with six trains departing from Jammu after a day-long suspension, has again been halted due to flash floods and heavy soil erosion in the Chakki river area, the officials said.

With the rain stopping in some areas, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah rushed to Jammu from Srinagar to personally review the situation in the region.

Officials said that the phone and network services were restored across all networks on Wednesday, 24 hours after the damage to optical fibres caused outages in the Union territory

The death toll in the Vaishno Devi landslide has gone up to 34 with rescuers pulling out more bodies from under the debris, the officials said, a day after the disaster struck the route to the hilltop shrine in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district.

At least 20 people were injured in the landslide triggered by incessant heavy rain and are undergoing treatment in different hospitals, the officials said, adding the landslide struck near the Inderprastha Bhojnalaya at Ardhkuwari, about halfway along the winding 12-km trek from Katra to the shrine, at around 3 PM on Tuesday.

With more people feared trapped, rescue teams are continuing to dig through the mounds of rubble to look for survivors.

The pilgrimage to the shrine remained suspended for the second day. While the yatra had been stopped on the Himkoti trek route since morning on Tuesday, it was going on on the old route till afternoon when authorities decided to suspend it as a precautionary measure.

Jammu has recorded 380 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours ending at 8.30 AM on Wednesday, which is the highest for a 24-hour period since 1910 when the observatory was set up in the winter capital.

Four people, including three women, lost their lives in Doda district on Tuesday, while two bodies were found on Tuesday, including that of a BSF jawan in Pragwal. The other body found in Akhnoor is yet to be identified. Body of an irrigation department employee was found in Lakhanpur along the border of Punjab.

Heavy rains were also experienced in the Kashmir valley overnight, where the main Jhelum river has crossed the flood alert mark at Sangam in Anantnag district and at Ram Munshi Bagh in Srinagar this morning.

In Srinagar, water entered the residential areas in Kursu, Rajbagh, Bemina and Sekidafar, while most places in main Anantnag town also saw flood waters enter residential as well as commercial areas, leaving markets submerged, they said.

The waters also entered the district court complex in Anantnag district in south Kashmir, following which the district judge and other staff had to be evacuated by the SDRF personnel using a boat, the officials said.

The district administrations and police in Anantnag, Kulgam and Srinagar had to evacuate people living in low-lying areas to safety.

The Jammu-Srinagar national highway remained closed for vehicular traffic, along with over a dozen other roads struck by landslides over the past couple of days.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said his prayers are for everyone’s safety and well-being.

“The loss of lives due to a landslide on the route to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Temple is saddening. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. May the injured recover at the earliest. The administration is assisting all those affected,” he said in a post on X.

Chief Minister Abdullah said he has briefed Prime Minister Modi on the situation arising from heavy rains and flooding in the Jammu region and expressed gratitude for his assurance of continued assistance to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

The chief minister said they were slightly relieved as the rain had stopped on Wednesday.

“As compared to yesterday, we have got slight relief today (Wednesday) with the fact that the rains have stopped. Water is slowly receding in low-lying areas,” he said.

Officials said said a flash flood washed away 10 residential houses and a bridge in the remote Margi area of Kishtwar district, but there was no immediate report of any casualties.

The rains continued non-stop in most parts of the Jammu region over the past 24 hours with almost all water bodies, including Tawi, Chenab, Ujh, Ravi and Basanter, flowing several feet above the danger mark, the officials said.

However, the water level in most of the water bodies started receding after the rains stopped at around 11 AM, though the weather remained cloudy.

On August 14, a cloudburst triggered flash floods in Chisoti, the last motorable village en route to the Machail Mata shrine, in Kishtwar district leaving behind a trail of death and destruction. At least 65 people, mostly pilgrims, were killed and more than 100 were injured, while 32 are still missing. (PTI)

Jhelum floodwaters enter Kursu Rajbagh lanes, panic among residents

0

Srinagar: Panic gripped residents of Kursu Rajbagh in Srinagar after water from the river Jhelum started entering residential areas, submerging lanes and internal bilanes on Wednesday.

Eyewitnesses told KNO that the water level began rising rapidly in the morning, leaving them anxious.

“The lanes and bilanes are already submerged. Water has now reached our courtyards and is entering houses. People are frightened, many have shifted essential belongings to upper floors,” said Ghulam Ahmad, a local resident from Rajbagh.

Another resident said people were keeping a close watch on the situation. “Children and the elderly are the most affected. Everyone fears a repeat of the 2014 floods,” he said.

Locals complained that despite repeated requests, no visible preventive measures have been taken in their area. “The authorities should act now and something must be done immediately,” a group of residents said.

Officials from the Irrigation and Flood Control Department earlier said they were monitoring the situation closely and had stationed teams at vulnerable spots. “People are advised to remain cautious and follow advisories. Measures are in place to prevent any major breach,” an official said. (KNO)

Flood like situation, Hospitals priority of Govt: Sakina Itoo

Srinagar: Amid the flood-like situation triggered by incessant rains across J&K, Health and Medical Education Minister Sakina Itoo on Wednesday visited Lal Ded (LD) Hospital Srinagar to take stock of the prevailing situation and preparedness of the healthcare facilities.

Speaking to reporters after the visit, Itoo as per KNO, said she would personally inspect every major hospital in the Valley to assess requirements and ensure readiness in case of any emergency. “Here in LD Hospital, I interacted with the Principal GMC Srinagar, HODs and Medical Superintendent to review the arrangements. The GMC authorities have already taken necessary steps to deal with any emergency in case of floods.

The priority is to ensure patient safety and uninterrupted healthcare services,” she said.

While referring to the situation, she noted that the floods are “in the hands of Allah” but assured that Kashmir is relatively better off compared to Jammu, where the situation remains grim. “As rains have stopped here, the situation is under control. Had it continued, things could have turned worse. Hospitals are our top priority, and every possible step has been taken to maintain normalcy,” she added.

Itoo said that similar measures have been implemented at GMC Anantnag and other healthcare institutions across the Valley to safeguard patients and ensure smooth medical care.

Responding to questions about incomplete flood mitigation projects post-2014 deluge, she remarked, “That answer can only be given by those who were in government from 2014 to 2024. We took over just nine months ago, but we have initiated all possible steps. Whatever more will be required, will be done.” She further said, “If you play with nature, it will play back with you, and floods are a direct result of that.”

Later , the Minister carried out a series of visits to major hospitals in Srinagar, including Bone and Joint Hospital Barzulla, Children’s Hospital Bemina, and Shri Maharaja Hari Singh (SMHS) Hospital. During her inspections, she interacted with doctors, patients, and attendants to take stock of facilities and services.

Officials said the Minister directed concerned authorities to strengthen healthcare delivery with special focus on emergency services and patient convenience. She reviewed healthcare infrastructure, availability of medicines, and patient care arrangements at all hospitals visited. (KNO)

Airtel announces emergency connectivity support amid telecom disruptions in J&K, Ladakh

New Delhi: Bharti Airtel has announced a series of emergency support measures for customers in Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, and Himachal Pradesh, where telecom services have been severely affected due to ongoing extreme weather and heavy rainfall.

The spokesperson said that continuous rain and challenging weather conditions have disrupted connectivity across these regions, making it difficult for users to access essential communication services.

To support affected customers, Airtel has extended relief in the form of temporary service benefits.

Prepaid users whose plans are expiring this week will receive an automatic three-day extension that includes unlimited voice calls and 1GB of data per day, even if they are unable to recharge.

This initiative is aimed at ensuring that users remain connected despite local disruptions.

Postpaid and broadband customers will also benefit from a three-day grace period on their bill payments. This step is intended to provide customers with uninterrupted service during this period, allowing them time to manage payments once the situation stabilizes, the spokesperson added.

Meanwhile, Airtel has enabled Intra-Circle Roaming (ICR) in Jammu, Kashmir, and Himachal Pradesh. This will allow customers to access other available networks in the region, helping to maintain connectivity where Airtel’s own network may be temporarily impacted.

The company has deployed teams on the ground who are working to restore full network services at the earliest.

In its statement, Airtel reaffirmed its commitment to supporting its customers and ensuring they stay connected during difficult times.

“Airtel stands with the people of these regions and remains committed to keeping them connected,” said an Airtel spokesperson.

The company also urged customers to stay informed through its official communication channels for further updates.

Notably, a massive communication blackout has paralyzed daily life across Jammu and Kashmir. (KNO)

Srinagar: Amid the prevalent weather conditions, the weatherman here has stated that the next 24 hours are crucial for the entire Jammu and Kashmir.

According to KNO, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad said that the water level in the river Jhelum has increased in Kashmir as the rains continued to occur in the region.

“The water level will recede again once the rainfall stops,” he said, adding that unlike Kashmir, Jammu is presently witnessing a massive rise in rivers and streams.

“Due to the continuous rainfall in Jammu for the past one week, the water level in rivers and streams has increased in Jammu,” he said, adding that the people need to stay away from the low-lying areas and must remain safe and alert as there can be floods anytime.

However, he said that the next 24 hours are crucial for the entire Jammu and Kashmir.

Meanwhile, the authorities in both Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir issued weather advisories, warning the public of heavy rainfall, cloudbursts, flash floods and landslides over the next few days.

The advisory issued in Kargil advised residents, particularly those living near rivers, nallahs, and streams to remain alert and avoid venturing close to flood-prone areas.

People have also been advised to limit outdoor activities until weather conditions improve.

“All Sub Divisional Magistrates, Tehsildars, and concerned departments have been directed to closely monitor emergency situations and ensure men and machinery are kept in a state of readiness to deal with any eventualities,” the advisory read.

Meanwhile, the District Magistrate, Srinagar, issued a separate advisory warning of an “intense spell of rain, thundershowers, cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides” across parts of the Kashmir Division, including Srinagar, between August 26 and September 1.

The advisory urged residents of Fakir Gujri, Khonmouh, and nearby hilly areas to refrain from venturing near slopes and water bodies until conditions improve. Tourists, local Shikara operators, and sand miners have also been cautioned against crossing River Jhelum and its tributaries without verifying the situation.

Advisory issued as Sheshnag Nallah in Betaab Valley crosses highest flood level

0

Srinagar: The Sheshnag Nallah in the famous Betaab Valley of Pahalgam has crossed its all-time highest flood level, prompting authorities to issue urgent advisories for the public safety.

According to officials, the water level in the stream has surged to 6.02 ft, surpassing the danger mark of 5.09 ft and even breaching the previous highest flood level of 5.68 ft recorded earlier.

According to KNO, the flood alarm level for the Nallah is 4.59 ft, which has been well exceeded, triggering fears of potential damage in the surrounding areas.

“The water is now flowing at an unprecedented level, and our teams are already on the spot to monitor the situation closely,” an official said.

Authorities have urged residents, tourists and trekkers in the Pahalgam region to exercise extreme caution and stay away from rivers, streams and low-lying areas until the situation normalizes.

The sudden and sharp rise in the water level suggests that a cloudburst or very heavy rainfall in the upper reaches of Sheshnag and its catchment area may have triggered the rise.

However, the officials have been assessing the situation to determine the exact cause and to prevent any untoward incident.

The Betaab Valley, known for its scenic beauty and large tourist footfall, remains under close watch as the gushing waters of the Nallah pose a risk to nearby habitations, orchards and infrastructure.

Authorities have assured that they are fully alert and ready to respond to any emergency. (KNO)
