Traffic suspended on Jammu-Srinagar highway amid rains, landslides

Srinagar: Moderate to heavy rains lashed Jammu division for the third consecutive day on Tuesday, leading to suspension of traffic along the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, officials said.

Almost all the rivers and streams are flowing above or close to the danger mark, submerging a number of low-lying areas and roads in the city and elsewhere, they said.

The officials said the traffic on the 250-km Jammu-Srinagar national highway was suspended as a precautionary measure this morning following shooting of stones from the hillocks at Chanderkote, Kela Morh and Battery Cheshma in Ramban district.

The vehicular movement on the highway, the only all-weather road linking Kashmir with rest of the country, was suspended at Udhampur in Jammu and Qazigund in Kashmir, they said, adding it was raining heavily all along the highway when last reports were received.

The officials said a portion of the Padder road near Traith Nallah was washed away in Kishtwar district, while Ramnagar-Udhampur road in Udhampur and Jangalwar-Thathri road in Doda were closed following landslides at Konga and Thathri, respectively.

Reports of damage to nearly a dozen houses and cowshed were also received from higher reaches of Kishtwar, Doda and Rajouri districts.

The officials said the overflowing Modhopur barrage has crossed one lakh cusec mark and is continuously rising, triggering heavy flooding in several low-lying areas along the Ravi river in Kathua district.

The officials said water levels in the Taranah River, Ujh River, Maggar Khad, Sahar Khad, Ravi River, and their tributaries in Kathua are simultaneously rising and nearing the danger mark The Tawi river has crossed the 20 feet danger mark in Udhampur district, while downstream in Jammu it is flowing currently below the alert level, the officials said, Chenab is also flowing close to the warning level in Jammu.

Basanter River in Samba also crossed the danger mark of 4.5 feet this morning, they said.

According to meteorological department, Kathua district recorded the highest 155.6 mm of rainfall during the last 24 hours ending 8.30 am followed by Bhaderwah in Doda at 99.8 mm, Jammu (81.5 mm) and Katra (68.8mm).

Authorities have already issued advisories, asking people to stay away from water bodies and landslide-prone areas amid the weather forecast predicting moderate to heavy rainfall at many places in Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Reasi, Udhampur, Rajouri, Ramban, Doda and Kishtwar districts with possibility of cloudbursts, flash floods and landslides in high altitude areas till August 27. FDA cracks down on Rotten Meat, Sweets; 9 dealers licences suspended

0

Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Tuesday released the “much-awaited” list of nine suspended FSSAI licenses across Srinagar and Anantnag in its ongoing crackdown on rotten meat, synthetic cheese, and expired sweets, officials said.

The official list, exclusively available with KNO issued by the FDA, shows the suspension of licenses of several prominent meat and food outlets, including establishments in Lasjan, Zakura, Qamarwari, and Anantnag’s KP Road, Achabal, and Kadipora.

The action follows large-scale seizures reported earlier this week. As earlier reported by KNO, FDA teams had confiscated over 12,000 kg of meat, 21 quintals of synthetic cheese, and 440 quintals of expired rasgulla being pushed into markets ahead of the festival season.

The establishments with suspended licenses are: M/S Al-Taqwa Foods (Lasjan, Srinagar, Altaf Ahmad Chadinoo); M/S Aarif Enterprises (Bulbul Bagh, Tengpora, Srinagar); M/S Sunshine Foods (Industrial Estate, Zakura, Srinagar); M/S Anmol Foods (Parimpora Ghat, Qamarwari, Srinagar); M/S Jubilant Food Works Ltd. (Domino’s Pizza, KP Road, Anantnag); M/S Shaun Shahi Biryani (KP Road, Anantnag); M/S Shan Fish Fry (Achabal Adda, Anantnag); M/S Bismillah Sweets (Industrial Estate, Anantnag); and M/S Khanday Poultry (Kadipora, Anantnag).

The FDA in an earlier public notice, stated that the violators would face prosecution under the Food Safety Act, which prescribes penalties up to Rs 10 lakh, cancellation of licenses, and imprisonment of up to six years.

She also confirmed earlier that 12 food samples had been tested so far—four of them declared unsafe due to harmful synthetic colors.

Officials further said that investigations are underway and more establishments could face similar action in the coming days. (KNO)

Mehbooba Mufti urges CM Omar to take up J&K prisoners’ plight with centre

Srinagar: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti on Monday urged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to lead an all-party delegation to various jails across the country where prisoners from Jammu & Kashmir were lodged and to raise the issue with Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Addressing reporters in Srinagar, Mehbooba Mufti, as per KNO said many prisoners, including senior leaders from various political and religious groups have been languishing in jails for years without conviction and suffer from severe health issues.

“Shabir Shah and the Amir of Jamaat-e-Islami are suffering from serious illnesses and even their families had to struggle for their treatment. What about the poor ones, some of whom have been behind bars for over 10 years without conviction,” she said.

She accused authorities of denying parole, remission and bail to such prisoners, alleging a discriminatory approach. “Hardened criminals were granted parole several times, but our prisoners are denied even basic relief,” she said.

Mufti stressed that the issue transcends politics. “I want to tell Omar that we are in opposition and cannot do anything. But you can. This is not politics, this is about humanity. Tell the Home Minister to bring those prisoners languishing outside J&K back to local jails so their trials become easier and quicker for their families,” she said.

Earlier, Police foiled the PDP’s protest march from the party headquarters near Sher-e-Kashmir Park, stopping the protesters from moving ahead.

Reacting to her remarks, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said such decisions were taken in New Delhi, not in Srinagar. “The decisions of Jammu and Kashmir’s security are taken in Delhi, in the Home Ministry. It would be better if they go to Delhi, meet the Home Minister and present this matter as we did. If they just want to hold a demonstration here, no one will object,” he said. (KNO)

JKSSB paper leak sparks outcry, aspirants call it ‘betrayal’

Srinagar: The cancellation of the Jammu and Kashmir Services Selection Board (JKSSB) Junior Engineer (Electrical) exam on Sunday triggered anger and despair, with aspirants calling it ‘a betrayal of their years of hard work’.

What unfolded inside the exam halls yesterday is now spilling into a larger political row, exposing the deep cracks in a system already scarred by repeated recruitment scandals.

At Srinagar’s Kothibagh exam centre, according to KNO, emotional scenes were witnessed as the aspirants broke down before cameras.

Muzamil, an engineering graduate from Sopore, recalled how he gave up cricket for two years to prepare.

“I wanted to support my parents. Today, I walked back home with humiliation. Our futures are being stolen,” he said.

Samar, a fresh graduate from NIT, described the handling of the exam as “absolute chaos.”

“We were given papers at 11 am, told to return them within 5–10 minutes, and later handed the same papers again. By then, questions were already circulating on WhatsApp. Where is the secrecy? Where is the fairness?” he said.

The JKSSB initially cited inclement weather for the disruption, but videos from several centres showed students scrolling through phones while filling OMR sheets. For many aspirants, it was not just mismanagement but a collapse of credibility.

“This is not an isolated incident. Scam after scam has turned JKSSB into a synonym for corruption and negligence,” said Nasir Khuehami, convenor of the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA), which has written to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, seeking removal of officers and a transparent probe.

Meanwhile, PDP leader Iltija Mufti accused the National Conference-led government of “wrecking the future of youth” through incompetence. “Instead of transparency, this government is turning recruitment into a den of corruption,” she said.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), she wrote: “Received hundreds of phone calls from distressed JE aspirants since yesterday. Our youth can’t dare to dream because the government itself is wilfully shattering their dreams with every successive scam and the inordinate delay to rationalise reservation. We demand relief for JE aspirants by scheduling their exam on a date that doesn’t clash with another competitive test. Instead of being apologetic and making amends, JKSSB is again throwing them into despair. Why are you criminalising education and merit?”

Defending the move, CM’s Advisor Nasir Aslam Wani said the cancellation was aimed at “maintaining transparency” and that fresh dates would be announced soon.

But the damage appears deeper than a single mishandled exam. Jammu and Kashmir’s unemployment rate stands at 6.7 percent—nearly double the national average of 3.5 percent.

The crisis is sharper among graduates and postgraduates: more than 31 percent of those registered as unemployed in early 2024 hold advanced degrees. A PhD in political science selling dry fruits in Shopian, or a doctorate in botany tutoring teenagers while planning to leave Kashmir, are not isolated stories but symptoms of a system that has consistently failed its most educated.

“It feels like our future is being stolen in daylight,” said an aspirant, voicing frustration over repeated exam failures. (KNO)

Medicos protest in Kupwara after attack on doctor, staff at CHC Kralgund

0

Srinagar: The assault on a doctor and two staff members at Community Health Centre (CHC) Kralgund in this North Kashmir District triggered protests in health facilities on Monday, demanding stern action against the accused.

Condemning the assault, doctors and paramedical staff, as per KNO, staged demonstrations at CHC Kralgund and Sub-District Hospital (SDH) Langate. They demanded strict punishment for the culprits and said such incidents instil fear among healthcare workers, ultimately affecting patient care.

“We demand justice and action against all those involved. Such attacks should not be repeated in the future”, said one of the protesting doctors.

Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Kupwara, Dr Masrat Iqbal denounced the attack, assuring that police are investigating the matter and more arrests are likely. “This cannot be tolerated at any cost. If there are grievances, people should approach the BMO or CMO directly”, the officer said.

The strike was later called off after authorities assured stringent action against the accused.

It is noteworthy, that the incident took place on Sunday when miscreants allegedly attacked a doctor and two employees after a patient with a hand injury was brought to the CHC. Police have since arrested two individuals, while more arrests are expected. (KNO)

South Kashmir residents urge Fast-track construction of 250-ded Maternity & Child Care Hospital in Anantnag

0

Srinagar: Residents of south Kashmir have urged the government to immediately begin construction work on the long-awaited 250-bedded Maternity and Child Care Hospital (MCCH) at Janglatmandi in Anantnag, saying that despite announcements, no progress has been made on the ground.

Speaking to KNO, locals said that the project, which was announced earlier this year with an allocation of Rs 86 crore in the budget, was supposed to be completed within two years, but almost one year has already passed without any work starting.

“We only hear announcements in newspapers and on TV. Nothing has been done on the ground so far. If one year has already passed, when will the government actually construct it?” asked Abdul Rashid, a local.

Another local, Shabir Ahmad, said the hospital is a pressing need for the entire south Kashmir region. “The existing MCCH at Sherbagh is unsafe, overcrowded and completely unfit to cater to the patient rush. The new hospital at Janglatmandi must be constructed without wasting any more time,” he said.

In March this year, during the budget session, the government sanctioned funds for the project. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had announced that Rs 86 crore had been allocated for the construction of a modern 250-bed facility in Anantnag. However, the delay has left people frustrated and anxious about the safety of patients.

The Maternity and Child Care Hospital continues to function in an unsafe building in Sherbagh since 2014. The hospital caters not only to Anantnag but also to patients from Pulwama, Kulgam, Shopian, Ramban and parts of the Chenab Valley.

Doctors said the existing building, already declared unsafe by the Fire and Services Department nearly a decade ago, is grossly inadequate to handle the patient load.

“Every night, more than 100 patients remain admitted in the labour and surgical wards, while thousands throng the OPD daily. With just limited labour wards, four surgical wards and a single operation theatre, the situation is unimaginable. Beds are placed in corridors, multiple patients share one bed, and the hospital remains noisy and overcrowded,” said a senior doctor.

Another official admitted that the unsafe condition of the building poses a constant threat. “If any mishap occurs, who will take responsibility? Patients and doctors are working in constant fear,” he said.

Officials, along with locals, asked whether the government was waiting for a major tragedy before waking up from its slumber.

According to locals, over the years, several proposals to shift the hospital have been abandoned midway. Seven years ago, authorities had decided to shift the hospital to the Rehmat-e-Alam building in Sarnal after spending nearly Rs 13 crore on its construction. But later, an IIT Jammu safety assessment declared the structure unsafe, and the plan was shelved.

The institute had recommended retrofitting of vital beams at a cost of around Rs 8 crore, but the proposal was never taken up, leaving the hospital to continue in its unsafe, congested premises

With over 50,000 patients visiting the OPD every month and around 10,000 indoor admissions, the need for a new hospital is being felt more than ever.

Residents said that every day, thousands of women, children and even patients from the Jammu division are forced to face hardships due to the lack of space and poor infrastructure.

“Maternal and child care is a sensitive issue. We cannot risk lives anymore. The government must immediately start construction work at Janglatmandi. Empty announcements won’t save lives,” said Mohammad Yousuf, another resident.

Notably, Minister for Health and Medical Education, Sakina Itoo, during her recent visits to the hospital, admitted that the facility is in a dilapidated condition and assured that the issue is being addressed.

However, locals insist that only visible work on the ground will restore their confidence. “We appeal to the government to treat this project as a top priority. Anantnag and the entire south Kashmir cannot wait any longer,” they said. (KNO)

Govt bans USB drives on official devices to enhance cybersecurity

Srinagar: The Jammu & Kashmir government has prohibited the use of USB drives and pen drives on official devices across all administrative departments in the Union Territory. This decision aims to safeguard sensitive government data and reduce the risk of data breaches.

An official order issued by M Raju, Commissioner Secretary to the Government, accessed by KNO, states that this measure is intended to strengthen the cyber security framework of Jammu & Kashmir.

“To enhance cyber security posture of the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir, protect sensitive government information, and minimize the risks of data breaches, malware infections, and unauthorised access, it has been decided to prohibit the use of pen drives on official devices across all Administrative Government Departments in Civil Secretariat Jammu and Srinagar, Deputy Commissioner Offices in all districts of UT,” the order states.

In exceptional cases where operational needs justify their use, controlled whitelisting may be permitted for up to 2 to 3 pen drives per department, upon formal request routed through the respective Administrative head to the State Informatics Officer (SIO), National Informatics Centre.

After approval pen drive must be physically submitted to the respective NIC Cell for reconfiguration, authorisation, and ownership registration before use.

As a secure alternative, the government departments have been directed to adopt (https://govdrive.gov.in) GovDrive, a cloud-based, multi-tenant platform offering every Government official 50 GB of secure storage with centralised access and synchronisation across devices.

As per the order, the use of public messaging platforms such as WhatsApp or unsecured online services like iLovePDF for processing, sharing, or storing official or confidential materials is strictly prohibited to uphold data sovereignty and prevent security breaches.

“All sensitive technical information, including ICT architecture diagrams, system configurations, vulnerability assessments, IP addressing schemes, and strategic technology plans, must be classified as confidential and handled exclusively through approved secure channels in accordance with Information Security Best Practices by MHA, CERT-In directives, and departmental data classification policies,” the order mentions.

The government has warned that failure to adhere to the instructions shall be viewed seriously and may invite disciplinary action under relevant rules governing official conduct, IT usage and administrative responsibility.

All departments have been asked to accord top priority to the implementation of the guidelines in the interest of secure and safe e-Governance. (KNO)

HC terms rotten meat sale ‘sensitive issue’, appoints Amicus Curiae

0

Srinagar: The High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh on Monday observed that the sale of rotten meat, poultry, and other unregulated food items is a matter of public importance with serious health implications.

According to KNO, a division bench comprising Justice Arun Palli and Justice Rajnesh Oswal made the observation while hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Advocate Mir Umar. The court appointed Senior Advocate Jehangir Iqbal Ganaie as Amicus Curiae to assist in the proceedings.

Advocate Shafqat Nazir appeared on behalf of the petitioner, while petitioner Mir Umar was also present in person before the court.

On behalf of the government, Senior Additional Advocate General Mohsin Qadri, Deputy Advocate Generals Hakim Aman Ali and Bikram Deep Singh, and Government Advocate Waseem Gul appeared. They informed the court that the government’s response to the PIL is ready and will be submitted during the day.

The bench directed that the matter be listed for the next hearing on September 3.

The PIL seeks the court’s intervention to address the sale and distribution of meat and other food products that are alleged to be unsafe for consumption.

It argues that the continued circulation of such items poses a risk to public health and indicates lapses in the implementation of food safety regulations. (KNO)
