Zuhaib Yousf Mir urges crackdown on Rotten Meat, Fake Milk, Tainted water in J&K

0

Srinagar: In the wake of the rotten meat scandal that has jolted Kashmir’s conscience, PDP leader Zuhaib Yousf Mir has urged the Jammu and Kashmir Government to expand its crackdown beyond the current raids on butchers and meat suppliers, warning that the rot runs deeper — from the spice market to bottled water plants.

Describing the recent revelations of stale, unbranded meat being sold to unsuspecting consumers as “a symptom of moral decay,” Mir said such unscrupulous practices have been silently harming public health for the last 15–16 years, contributing to the surge in lifestyle diseases and even cancer.

Mir welcomed the government’s aggressive actions against those he called “morally bankrupt perpetrators,” acknowledging the role of religious scholars issuing fatwas against the trade and food safety officers working tirelessly to trace the sources.

However, he stressed that rotten meat is only one part of a larger food safety emergency. “The same kind of scrutiny must be applied to the production of substandard masala, artificial milk, and contaminated mineral water,” Mir said, pointing to recent cases that have raised alarm — including the discovery of worms in sealed mineral water bottles and the arrest of a man in Baramulla for manufacturing chemical-based milk using potassium hydroxide pellets.

Calling food safety “paramount to public health,” Mir appealed for rigorous enforcement of regulations through consistent inspections and public education campaigns to help consumers make informed choices.

He warned that action taken only during scandals will not protect Kashmir’s future. “We need a vigilant, proactive system in place all year round,” Mir insisted, recommending dedicated budgetary provisions for permanent checkpoints, fully equipped food testing labs, and trained manpower in every district.

“This is not just about catching culprits after the damage is done,” he said. “It’s about safeguarding the health of our people for generations to come.”

Pulwama residents aghast at unscheduled power cuts amid scorching heat

0

Srinagar: Residents of Pulwama town and its adjoining areas have expressed strong resentment over unscheduled power cuts, particularly during the day, at a time when the valley is grappling with high temperatures.

Locals, speaking to KNO, said the outages, recently announced by the authorities, have made daily life difficult, especially for the elderly, patients, and students.

According to residents, they had been receiving an uninterrupted 24×7 power supply until last week. However, authorities suddenly introduced a four-hour outage schedule — two hours in the morning and two hours in the evening — affecting areas including Drusoo, Bonura, Bandzoo, Babhahra, Muchpuna, Gundipora, Tahab, Tanghar, Pinglena, and several parts of the main town. Even some localities equipped with smart meters have not been spared.

“We were getting round-the-clock electricity for months, but now we are forced to bear four hours of cuts every day,” said Manzoor Ahmad, a resident of Bandzoo. “In this scorching heat, even two hours without power feels unbearable. Fans stop, water pumps don’t work, and the elderly in our homes suffer the most.”

Locals said the new schedule has been implemented without prior consultation or public notice. “Suddenly, they changed the supply pattern. We were not even informed properly,” said Shabnum Jan from Drusoo. “If smart meters are supposed to ensure uninterrupted power, then why are we also facing cuts?”

The outages have also hit patients hard. Several residents said that people dependent on medical equipment, such as oxygen concentrators, are at risk. “My father is on oxygen therapy, and every time the power goes out, we have to rush to switch on the backup. It is stressful and unsafe,” said a distressed resident from the town area.

Locals have urged the Power Development Department (PDD) and district administration to intervene immediately.

“The government should restore the old 24×7 schedule or at least ensure that the cuts are minimised during daytime hours. We are ready to cooperate if there are genuine constraints, but people must not suffer silently,” said Abdul Rashid, another resident.

Residents have warned that if the issue is not addressed soon, they will stage peaceful protests to press for their demands. (KNO)

Kulgam anti-terror operation called off after 12 days

0

Srinagar: The prolonged anti-terror operation in the Akhal forest area of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district was officially called off on Tuesday, bringing to an end 12 days of one of the longest counter-terror operations in recent years.

An official informed KNO that the decision was taken after security forces, despite an exhaustive search through dense alpine forests and rugged terrain, found no fresh contact with the terrorists believed to have been hiding in the area.

“After continuous search and combing for nearly two weeks, and with no further movement detected, the operation was concluded this morning,” he said.

The encounter began on August 1 after specific intelligence inputs suggested the presence of at least two to three heavily armed terrorists in the higher reaches of Kulgam. The initial contact led to a gunfight that spread over several days.

Two Army soldiers—Pritpal Singh and Harminder Singh—were killed, while at least ten others sustained injuries. One local terrorist was also killed in the initial exchange of fire. Sources said it appears the remaining terrorists managed to break the cordon.

The operation was marked by intermittent bursts of heavy gunfire as terrorists reportedly shifted positions deep within the forest cover. Security forces deployed drones, sniffer dogs, high-tech surveillance equipment, and attack helicopters to locate possible hideouts, but the thick vegetation and steep slopes made access extremely challenging. Large parts of the forest were cordoned off, with additional reinforcements rushed in from the Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, CRPF, and elite Para (Special Forces).

A security official said that given the topography and the fact that the forest connects to higher ridges towards Pir Panjal, it is possible the terrorists managed to slip away during the operation.

The official said that while the encounter site has been cleared, surveillance in the area will remain tight to prevent any possible reappearance of terrorists.

Unlike urban encounters, terrorists in these cases often choose treacherous mountain and forest terrain, forcing prolonged gunfights and large-scale troop deployment.

As a result, troops often suffer casualties in such protracted operations, and flushing out terrorists from jungles requires sustained cordon and search in difficult terrain and dense forests. (KNO)

Medical technologist alleges CMO Pulwama’s inaction over illegal sample collection center

0

Srinagar: A professional medical laboratory technologist, Ali Mohammad Ganie, has accused health authorities in Pulwama of failing to act against an illegal blood sample collection centre, despite his repeated complaints.

Ali Mohammad, who is a Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT) holder and runs his own sample collection center in the district, alleges that the negligence poses a serious threat to public health.

In a formal complaint addressed to the Director of Health Services Kashmir, Ali Mohammad calls the collection centre as “unauthorized and illegal”. He identified the collection centre to be operating under the name of Qadris Clinical Laboratory in Buchoo Tral.

He claims the centre, run by Mohammad Younis Rather, has been functioning for over a month without proper registration from the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Pulwama, thereby flouting all established regulations.

“I have been forced to approach the media to highlight this grave issue given the fact that the collection centre is run by a person who has no required degree or diploma to operate the centre,” Ali Mohammad told this reporter, revealing that his appeals to the CMO’s office have gone unanswered.

Pertinently, Ali Mohammad’s complaint carries additional weight, being a member of the Kashmir Private Diagnostic Centres Association J&K. He says he is not just pointing to a public health concern but also to an issue of unfair and unregulated business practices within the diagnostic sector.

He rues, “If any person without a degree or diploma starts to run labs for sample collection, it would mean that the degrees or diplomas are useless. It has already happened to many other professions in our society.”

In the formal complaint, the medical laboratory technologist has stated that the “illegal and unauthorized operation” could have “serious repercussions on the local population” and lead to “an irreparable loss which cannot be compensated later on.”

He further alleged that hanging someone else’s degree or diploma certificate in order to hoodwink common people is an old trick, but the concerned department should act, as more such cases would be prevalent if proper checking of the diagnostic centres takes place.

Ali Mohammad is demanding an immediate intervention from the higher authorities as he has already approached the Director of Health Services Kashmir and a thorough probe into the operation of all diagnostic centres in the Valley, pointing out that strict action is necessary to uphold public safety and the principle of justice.

It is in place to mention here that running a sample collection centre requires at least a bachelor’s degree or diploma in medical lab technology. (KNT)
