Didn’t get proper sleep till Pahalgam attack perpetrators were killed: LG Sinha

Srinagar: Revealing that he couldn’t get proper sleep till three terrorists involved in April 22 Pahalgam terror attack were eliminated by the security forces, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, on Saturday reiterated that attack on tourists at Baisaran Valley that left 26 civilians, mostly tourists dead, was assault on India’s soul.

In an interview to national TV channel, LG Sinha, according to KNO, said, “I could not sleep after April 22. It was an attack on India’s soul. It was only after the three killers were eliminated that I got a sound sleep.”

Asked why there was not a single policeman present in Baisaran Valley, where tourists were enjoying picnic with pizza sellers around, LG Sinha replied, “The person who provided ziplining and other leisures to tourists in Baisaran was a private player. Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Development Corporation had not granted him any permission. He did not inform the administration and police that he had started this. For four years, there was peace and calm throughout Kashmir Valley, and several small tourist spots had sprung up.”

On Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s remark that the Lieutenant Governor’s failure in providing security to tourists put the nation on the brink of war, LG said, “If he has said this, I welcome it. But he must also say that for decades, Pakistan used to bring out a “strike calendar” for the Valley, and schools, colleges and markets used to remain closed for 132 days in a year. There were frequent incidents of stone pelting, and security personnel were being killed.”

On Akhilesh Yadav’s question why the three terrorists were killed on the day the Home Minister was to reply to the debate in Parliament, Manoj Sinha replied, “Unko maaloom nahin hoga (he may not know). The operation began on April 22 itself, and the directive was that the killers must not be allowed to flee from Kashmir at any cost. God (Ishwar) helps those whose ‘neeyat’ (intention) is good, and they had to die on that very day.”

LG Sinha said that the tourist destinations that were closed after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack are being reopened gradually with increased security measures. However, Baisaran remained shut due to Amarnath Yatra and the lack of a road leading directly to the site.

He said that the perpetrators were Pakistani nationals, with the NIA currently handling the investigation.

Emphasising that foreign infiltration remains the last area of concern, Sinha noted that local recruitment for terror groups has drastically reduced, from 125–150 annually to just one this year.

He highlighted India’s strong retaliatory stance through Operation Sindoor, stating that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made it clear that any future terror attack will be treated as an act of war.

Reflecting on his five-year tenure, LG Sinha outlined achievements including restored law and order, the end of hartals, the resurgence of cinema and education, and record job transparency.

He noted that over 40,000 government jobs were provided, alongside major growth in the tourism and self-employment sectors. “Tourists are returning, and with four lakh Amarnath pilgrims expected, they will go back as our peace ambassadors,” LG Sinha said. (KNO)

Smugglers loot Shopian forests, Official inaction under scanner

Srinagar: Illegal tree felling is continuing unchecked in South Kashmir’s Shopian district, sparking serious questions over the role of the departments responsible for protecting the region’s green cover.

Fresh visuals have surfaced from near Sukh Sarai along the historic Mughal Road, close to the tourist spot Dubjan, showing large trees cut down in an area under the jurisdiction of the Wildlife Department. Locals allege that despite protection staff being deployed, timber smugglers are operating openly in broad daylight.

A GNS team visiting the site found fresh stumps of felled trees scattered across the area. No forest or wildlife officials were present on the ground at the time. Residents are questioning how such large-scale logging could take place without the knowledge of the staff, and some suspect that officials may even be complicit.

When contacted, the Wildlife Range Officer in Shopian and other concerned officials had no clear explanation. They simply said, “We will take action.” Locals argue that such action is meaningless once the timber has already been cut and transported.

People in the area have appealed to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to take serious note of the matter, identify those involved, including any officials, and ensure strict legal action is taken.

The Forest Department claims to have planted over 1.5 crore saplings in 2024–25 under the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” (One Tree in Mother’s Name) campaign. Locals, however, are asking who will protect these trees once they grow. (GNS)

Statehood Restoration: JKPCC Chief leads hunger strike in Srinagar

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) Chief Tariq Hameed Karra on Saturday began a hunger strike in Srinagar to press for the restoration of statehood.

Speaking at the launch of the protest at the party’s Srinagar office, Karra, as per KNO, said the Government of India had downgraded Jammu and Kashmir to a Union Territory on August 5, 2019, after splitting it into two parts, and had assured on several occasions, both inside and outside Parliament, that statehood would be restored soon.

“It has been nine to ten months since the elections, but no steps have been taken. Their intentions seem doubtful and their words are different from their actions,” Karra alleged, adding that the JKPCC had been holding programmes across all 20 districts of the J&K to highlight the demand.

Karra said the ongoing agitation had been planned in two phases, including outreach programmes from August 1 to 4 with civil society members, traders, transporters and other stakeholders and protests marking August 5 as a ‘black day’ in all districts.

He claimed that in some districts, party workers were prevented from leaving their homes on August 5. “Even today, we have videos from our district presidents showing how they were stopped,” he said.

He said that the hunger strike programme, coinciding with the anniversary of the Quit India Movement, will run from August 9 to 20 in both Jammu and Kashmir divisions. He added that all district units will take turns to hold symbolic fasts in Srinagar and Jammu.

“Today Srinagar district is participating. Tomorrow, Anantnag will join, then Budgam, and similarly in Jammu. Every district will join to send a united message,” he said, adding that senior Congress leaders, including AICC General Secretary Ghulam Ahmad Mir, were present at the launch.

The JKPCC Chief urged the Centre to bring a bill in Parliament during the current session to restore J&K’s constitutional status. “We will not stop until the statehood is returned,” he said. (KNO)

Crackdown on unsafe meat continues across J&K

Srinagar: The crackdown against the substandard and rotten meat continued across Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday with officials from the Food Safety Department (FSD) seizing and destroying 35 kilograms of adulterated meat during a market inspection in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

An official from the department told KNO that the meat was found unfit for consumption during the check conducted in local markets. “We destroyed at least 35 kg of rotten meat on the spot to prevent it from reaching consumers,” the official said.

The inspection was part of an ongoing state-wide campaign, aimed at curbing the sale of unsafe meat products amid growing public concern over food quality.

Over the past week, similar seizures have been reported from multiple districts, prompting authorities to intensify their enforcement measures.

The Food Safety Department has urged consumers to carefully check the quality and validity of food items before purchase and consumption. “It is the right of people to know what they are eating. We appeal to the public to immediately report any suspicious or substandard products to the department,” the official added.

Restaurant owners, butchers and food vendors have also been advised to maintain strict hygiene standards and ensure only quality meat products are sold.

Meanwhile, the authorities warned that violators will face strict action, including fines and possible closure of establishments. (KNO)

ECI deregisters 3 little-known parties of J&K

Srinagar: In a significant development, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has deregistered three obscure political parties from Jammu & Kashmir.

According to an official order, a copy of which is in possession of KNO, the poll body today removed the All Jammu & Kashmir Republican Party, Indian Peoples Conference Party, and Socialist Democratic Party from its registry.

These parties were served show-cause in the month of June, asking them to explain why they shall not be de-registered.

The ECI took this action after it was found that these parties neither participated in the electoral process in the last six years nor existed at their registered addresses.

As per ECI guidelines, any political party that fails to contest elections for six consecutive years is liable to be delisted from the registered parties.

The Representation of the People Act-1951 mandates that political parties must provide a communication address to the poll-body at the time of registration.

It also provides that any change in the party’s name, head office, office bearers, or address must be communicated to the Commission without any delay. (KNO)

2 soldiers killed, 2 injured; Kulgam encounter enters 9th day

Srinagar: Two Army soldiers were killed and as many injured in an ongoing encounter with terrorists in the dense forests of Akhal in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district, which entered its ninth day on Saturday, officials said.

They said that the soldiers were killed during a heavy exchange of fire late Friday night in the forest area, where terrorists remain holed up in the upper reaches. “Terrorists hurled a grenade at forces, resulting in the death of two soldiers and injuries to two more,” they said.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Chinar Corps paid tribute to the fallen soldiers, stating: “Chinar Corps honours the supreme sacrifice of the Bravehearts, L/Nk Pritpal Singh and Sep Harminder Singh, in the line of duty for the Nation. Their courage and dedication will forever inspire us. #IndianArmy expresses deepest condolences and stands in solidarity with the bereaved families. Operation continues.”

Sources said loud explosions and heavy gunfire echoed from the forest area throughout the night. Security forces are deploying drones, UAVs, helicopters, and other surveillance equipment to track terrorists believed to be hiding in natural caves. Explosives have also been dropped on suspected hideouts.

Elite para commandos, equipped with advanced gadgets, have joined the operation.

A senior security official said forces are proceeding cautiously to prevent further casualties.

The operation began on August 1 after specific intelligence inputs indicated the presence of terrorists in the Akhal forest area. So far, one terrorist was been killed and 11 security personnel injured since the start of the operation.

Following the initial exchange of fire on August 1, the operation was briefly paused for the night, but the cordon was tightened, and reinforcements were rushed in. The next day, a terrorist was killed, and the encounter has continued since.

Senior police and Army officers, including J&K Police Chief Nalin Prabhat and Army’s Northern Commander Lt Gen Pratik Sharma, are closely monitoring the situation.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha while paying tributes to the fallen soldiers said: “I salute the indomitable courage of our brave hearts L/Nk Pritpal Singh and Sep Harminder Singh, who made the supreme sacrifice in the service of the motherland. Their valour, grit, and determination will never be forgotten. My thoughts are with the bereaved families in this hour of grief.”

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah laid a wreath and paid rich tribute to the fallen soldiers in Kulgam, calling their sacrifice a source of pride for the nation. “The sacrifices of these valiant soldiers will always be remembered. The government stands firmly with the armed forces and their families,” he said. (KNO)
