Aug 5 date of justice, PM Modi’s bold decision gave birth to ‘Naya J&K’: LG Sinha

Srinagar: Terming August 5 as the date of insaaf (justice) for Jammu and Kashmir, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Tuesday said exactly six years ago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a bold and historic decision by abrogating Article 370, giving birth to Naya Jammu and Kashmir.

Speaking at a ceremony organized to handover the appointment letters to 158 Next of Kins (NoKs) of Kashmiri Civilians killed by Pakistan-backed terrorists, LG Sinha, according to KNO said, “I pay tributes to all the martyrs who became victims of Pak-sponsored terrorism. For over three decades, the terrorist nation spilled the blood of innocent Kashmiris. The pain endured by the terror victim families can’t be translated into words,” LG Sinha said.

Becoming emotional while narrating stories of families who lost loved ones to terror, LG Sinha assured them that their wait for justice was over. “Many elderly people passed away waiting for justice. But now, the justice has been done.”

He said that the government has launched a dedicated portal to document and support terror victim families. “We are rehabilitating the families on a war footing. The family of a slain SPO had to face social boycott, his widow and daughters struggled alone. I assure them – justice and jobs will be provided.”

“We are duty-bound to stand by the martyrs’ families. While we can’t fill the void left by their loss, we can ensure they live a dignified life” he said.

LG Sinha said, “Over the past six years, the common people of Jammu and Kashmir have come to understand how separatism and terrorism were deliberately nurtured in the region. Thousands of innocent civilians lost their lives to terror. Those who operated and sustained the terror ecosystem within J&K are just as responsible as Pakistan for the bloodshed and suffering.”

“For decades, the destiny of this region remained in the hands of those who thrived on fear and violence. But after August 5, 2019, that changed — the power to shape your future was returned to you.”

LG SINHA SHARES TRAGIC ACCOUNTS

The Lieutenant Governor shared the tragic account of Abdul Majid Mir’s family, whose lives were shattered on June 29, 2004. On that day, Abdul Majid, from Sheikhpura, Baramulla, was kidnapped and brutally murdered by terrorists.

“Abdul Majid’s family lost their sole breadwinner and received Rs 1 lakh as an ex-gratia payment under the Security Related Expenditure (SRE) scheme. Despite Abdul Majid Mir’s martyrdom, his family struggled to live a life of dignity. Today, by providing a government job to his son, Mudasir Majid, the administration has fulfilled its long-overdue responsibility.

After three decades of hardship, justice has finally been delivered to Suhail Majeed and his family. Today, Suhail, a resident of Anantnag, received an appointment letter for the government job. His father, Abdul Majeed Wani, was shot dead by Pakistan-backed terrorists on August 30, 1994. Justice has been finally delivered to the family after 31 years.

On February 24, 2000, SPO Manzoor Ahmad Rather, a resident of Warpora, Baramulla, was killed by Pakistan-backed terrorists. For 25 years, his family received no compensation. Today his son Khurshid Ahmad Rather has received an appointment letter. Traumatic period for the family is finally over.

For Parvez Ahmad Dar, the path to justice was painful. On July 6, 1996, terrorists killed his father, Ghulam Qadir Dar. On July 30, 2004, his brother, Aijaz Ahmad Dar, was also killed by terrorists. 29 years after his father’s death, Parvez’s nightmare is over,” the Lieutenant Governor said.

He observed that the void in the lives of terror victims’ families cannot be filled with financial assistance or jobs, but it will be ensured that these families can live with dignity.

“We will do everything possible for the rehabilitation of terror victims. It is my promise to the NoKs of terror victim families that perpetrators of heinous crime will receive exemplary punishment. We will also ensure the harshest possible punishment to terror sympathisers,” he said, adding, “I assure the family members of civilian martyrs that I will not rest until every family that has been a victim of the terrorists’ atrocities gets justice. I want to tell the loved ones of martyrs that the dreams of your father or your mother will now be fulfilled,” he said.

“Many families lived under constant threat and intimidation for over thirty years. Today, that fear has begun to fade. They now see a ray of hope. I know each one of you had been waiting for this Naya Jammu and Kashmir — and it has become a reality.”

IN NAYA J&K TERRORISTS ARE NOT GIVEN GOVERNMENT JOBS

The Lieutenant Governor while addressing those questioning the changes in J&K said, “To those who ask what’s new, I say – this is Naya J&K where terrorists are not given government jobs, but the families of martyrs are honored and empowered. Here, tears are not shed for terrorists, but the tears of common Kashmiris are wiped with compassion.”

“In Naya J&K, children hold pens instead of stones, Pakistan no longer dictates shutdown calendars – the government issues event calendars, youth take out Tiranga rallies in Pulwama, schools and colleges remain open year-round, separatists are no longer glorified – common Kashmiris are.”

He said, “On 5 August 2019, a new Jammu Kashmir was born. A new Jammu Kashmir that had dreams of a golden future in its eyes. A new Jammu Kashmir, which treated all its citizens as equal and removed discrimination that was prevalent for seven decades.”

UNDER PM MODI’S LEADERSHIP INDIA HAS DRAWN NEW REDLINE AGAINST TERRORISM

The Lieutenant Governor called upon every section of the society to rise against terrorism. “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, India has drawn a new redline against terrorism and equal punishment will be given to terrorists and their sponsors. India has made it clear that if terror is state policy, it will be met with a visible and forceful response.”

Recalling recent counter-terrorism operations, LG Sinha highlighted the resolve of the security forces. “Our armed forces recently avenged the Pahalgam terror attack by neutralizing the three terrorists involved. Earlier in May, nine terror camps were destroyed deep inside Pakistan and PoK. PM Modi has made it clear that any act of terror against Indian citizens will be considered an act of war, and those responsible will pay a heavy price,” he said.

He said, “Peace is a prerequisite for progress. There is no place for terrorism in a civilized society. Many generations of J&K have suffered the brunt of terrorism perpetrated by the neighbouring country. Every person has to take a pledge that they will not allow this to happen again.”

The Lieutenant Governor also commended the Administrative and Police officials for addressing the issues and grievances of terror victim families with utmost sensitivity and sincerity.

Chief Secretary, Atal Dulloo; DGP, Nalin Prabhat; Principal Secretary Home, Chandraker Bharti; Commissioner Secretary GAD, M Raju; Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Vijay Kumar Bidhuri; VK Birdi, IGP Kashmir; Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Akshay Labroo; SSP Srinagar, Dr.G.V.Sundeep Chakravarthy, senior administrative and police officials and family members of victims of terrorism were present. Army officer allegedly assaults 4 SpiceJet staffers over cabin baggage issue at Srinagar airport

Srinagar: A passenger, identified as an Army officer, allegedly assaulted four SpiceJet employees at the boarding gate of flight SG-386 from Srinagar to Delhi on July 26, leaving one with a spinal fracture.

According to the airline, the confrontation began at Srinagar airport when the passenger was informed that his cabin baggage weighed 16 kg—more than double the permitted 7 kg limit.

“When politely informed of the excess baggage and asked to pay the applicable charges, the passenger refused and forcefully entered the aerobridge without completing the boarding process – a clear violation of aviation security protocols. He was escorted back to the gate by a CISF official,” a SpiceJet spokesperson said.

“Our staff members suffered a spinal fracture and serious jaw injuries after being attacked with punches, repeated kicks, and a queue stand,” the spokesperson said.

One employee collapsed unconscious on the floor but the passenger continued kicking and hitting the fainted employee, the spokesperson claimed.

“Another staff member suffered bleeding from the nose and mouth after receiving a forceful kick to the jaw while bending down to assist the colleague who had fainted. The injured employees were rushed to hospital and remain under treatment for the grievous injuries sustained,” he said. The injured were taken to the hospital and are undergoing treatment.

An FIR has been registered with the local police, and the airline has initiated the process to place the passenger on the no-fly list in accordance with civil aviation regulations, the statement said.

SpiceJet has also written to the civil aviation ministry, apprising them about the assault on its staff and has requested appropriate action against the passenger.

The airline also said that it has secured the CCTV footage of the incident from the airport authorities and handed it over to the police.

Strongly condemning any act of violence against its employees, SpiceJet said it will pursue this matter to its fullest legal and regulatory conclusion.

In a statement issued here, the Defence PRO said the matter has come to the notice of the Army and is being taken seriously. “The Indian Army is committed to upholding the highest standards of discipline and conduct and takes all allegations seriously,” the statement read.

It added that full cooperation is being extended to the authorities investigating the incident. Notably, the incident came to light after a video went viral on social media, in which an Army officer was allegedly seen physically assaulting four staff members at the Srinagar airport during boarding for a flight.

Post ‘negligence cases’: 10 doctors transferred from DH Pulwama

0

Srinagar: In the wake of multiple allegations of medical negligence at the District Hospital Pulwama, the Directorate of Health Services Kashmir (DHSK) has ordered the transfer of ten doctors from the facility.

The move is being seen as a step towards restoring accountability and improving the quality of patient care at one of South Kashmir’s major health institutions.

Officials confirmed to KNO that the transfers were part of a broader strategy to revamp the healthcare system in the region, particularly in hospitals that have faced repeated complaints from the public.

The action comes days after J&K’s former Health Minister Sakina Itoo stated that a major reshuffle of doctors was on the cards across Jammu and Kashmir to address long-standing issues in the healthcare system.

“The hospital was in headlines due to repeated cases of alleged negligence. We hope this decision will bring some positive change,” said Mohammad Ayub, a local resident.

“We have seen patients suffer due to the negligent attitude of some staff. Accountability was long overdue,” said Riyaz Ahmad, an attendant, who recently visited the hospital.

Locals are hopeful that the reshuffle will result in better monitoring, increased professionalism and improved patient-doctor relationships.

“We demand that authorities ensure regular audits and patient feedback mechanisms to prevent such situations in future,” added Shahida Jan, a school teacher in Pulwama town.

“Hope this transfer will bring some effective change in health services of District Hospital Pulwama,” Sakeena Jabeen, a social activist from Pulwama said.

A senior health official said that the department is committed towards improving healthcare delivery and will not tolerate any dereliction of duty.

The Directorate is also planning further changes in staffing patterns, infrastructure upgrades and grievance redressal systems across hospitals in the Valley, he said.

Pertinently, 31 doctors have been transferred across Kashmir and among them 10 have been transferred from district hospital Pulwama alone. (KNO)

2 Terrorists killed in Kulgam, Hunt on for more as night halts encounter

Srinagar: Two terrorists were killed in an encounter with security forces in the Akhal forest belt of Devsar area in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Saturday. The operation was temporarily halted due to low visibility and will resume with the first light on Sunday, officials said.

A senior police officer told KNO that on a tip-off about the presence of terrorists in the forest area, a joint team of the Army, CRPF, and Jammu and Kashmir Police launched a cordon and search operation on Friday evening. “The terrorists present in the area opened fire which was retaliated to, triggering an encounter,” he said, “ In the gunfight two terrorists have been neutralised and the operation is on.”

Sources said that both slain terrorists are reportedly locals who had joined terrorist ranks two years ago. They were categorized as ‘C’ category terrorists.

Sources said that two more terrorists are believed to be trapped in the area. “A clearer picture regarding their identity and status of the operation will emerge by Sunday,” the sources said.

A soldier sustained injuries during the exchange of fire and has been shifted to a medical facility where his condition is said to be stable.

Army’s Chinar Corps posted on X: “Intermittent and intense firefight continued through the day. Alert troops responded with calibrated fire and tightened the noose while maintaining contact. Two terrorists have been neutralised so far. Operation Akhal continues.”

Officials said that the thick forest cover and rugged terrain have posed challenges, but the area remains under tight security surveillance. Additional reinforcements have been deployed to seal all possible escape routes.

Drone surveillance, night vision equipment, and thermal imaging devices are being used to track movements in the dense foliage.

The operation has been paused for the night due to poor visibility, in line with security protocols, and will resume at dawn.

J&K Director General of Police (DGP) Nalin Prabhat visited the encounter site and reviewed the ongoing counter-terror operation.

Pertinently, ‘Operation Akhal’ is the third major anti-terror operation in Jammu and Kashmir within the past week. On Wednesday, two terrorists were killed during “Operation Shivshakti” in Poonch district near the Line of Control following an infiltration attempt. Earlier, on July 28, three Pakistani terrorists were eliminated during “Operation Mahadev” in the Lidwas forest near Harwan on the outskirts of Srinagar. Those terrorists were linked to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. (KNO)

Amarnath Yatra 2025 concludes early due to inclement weather; over 4.14 lakh perform darshan

Srinagar: The authorities have prematurely concluded the Shri Amarnath Yatra 2025, cutting short its duration by a week, due to severe weather conditions and damage to the pilgrimage tracks caused by heavy rains along the Jammu and Kashmir hilly terrain.

Despite the adverse weather, as many as 6,497 pilgrims performed Darshan at the holy cave shrine of Amarnath in south Kashmir Himalayas on August 2, officials informed KNO.

They said the yatris included 4,586 males, 1,299 females, 62 children, 51 sadhus, and 5 sadhvis, along with 494 personnel from security forces who also availed the Darshan. With this, the total number of pilgrims who have performed Darshan during the Yatra has now crossed 4,14,311.

Originally scheduled to run from July 3 to August 9, the pilgrimage was set to coincide with Raksha Bandhan. However, this year, the Yatra lasted only 28 days instead of the usual 38.

Officials said that heavy rainfall has severely affected both the Baltal and Pahalgam routes used by pilgrims.

Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Vijay Kumar Bidhuri, speaking to KNO, said that due to recent heavy rains and the ongoing track maintenance required along both routes, the yatra has been suspended.

“With the deployment of machinery and personnel on the tracks from tomorrow, resumption is not feasible. The Yatra remains suspended from August 3 onwards on both routes,” the Div Com said.

This year, over 410,000 pilgrims visited the sacred shrine, compared to more than 510,000 last year.

With heightened security concerns this year, a multi-tier security arrangement was put in place, and the presence of security personnel was increased for the Yatra. Besides that, the government declared all routes to the Amarnath cave shrine a “no-flying zone,” banning all kinds of aviation platforms, including drones and balloons, for the duration of the Yatra.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha hailed the number of Amarnath pilgrims crossing the 4 lakh mark as a “miracle”.

He said the record participation of devotees from across the country and the world in the annual Amarnath Yatra stands as a testament to India’s unity and its unwavering resolve to overcome challenges.

The LG thanked the devotees for showing “immense faith” and “strengthening our priceless spiritual heritage”.

The cave shrine situated at 3,888 metres above sea level in the Kashmir Himalayas houses an ice stalagmite structure that wanes and waxes with the phases of the moon.

Devotees believe that the ice stalagmite structure symbolises the mythical powers of Lord Shiva.

While the Shri Amarnath Yatra concludes, devotees continue to arrive for the Baba Budha Amarnath Yatra in Poonch.

Swami Budha Amarnath Mandir is situated at the confluence of two flowing streams – Nallah Gagri and Pulsta Nadi – located between the main belt of the Pir Panchal Range at Rajpura Mandi, approximately 25 km northeast of Poonch city. The temple features four doors and houses a natural Shivlinga inside.

Every year, thousands of devotees from across the country visit Baba Budha Amarnath Mandir during the annual yatra, which takes place before Raksha Bandhan. A grand festival known as the Budha Amarnath Mela is also held at the temple, attracting large crowds and religious fervor. (KNO)
