Pain of Pahalgam terror attack victim families weighed heavily on my heart: PM Modi

0

Srinagar: Stating that pain of the families of Pahalgam terror attack victims, especially the daughters and children, weighed heavily on his heart, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that whosoever attacks Indian citizens will not be spared, even if he hides beneath the earth.

PM Modi, while addressing a public gathering in Varanasi, according to KNO, referred to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which left 26 civilians, mostly tourists dead. “Operation Sindoor was launched to avenge the attack on our unarmed citizens and demonstrate India’s military resolve,” he said.

“This is my first visit to Varanasi after Operation Sindoor. The entire world has seen how India responded through its indigenous strength. Whoever attacks India will not be spared,” PM Modi said, as per KNO,

He said, “The pain of the victims’ families, especially the daughters and children weighed heavily on my heart. I had prayed to Baba Vishwanath to give strength to those families. I had taken a pledge to avenge the Sindoor of our daughters,” PM Modi said, dedicating the success of ‘Operation Sindoor’ to Lord Mahadev.

Notably, though the event primarily marked the inauguration of development projects worth Rs: 2,200 crore and the release of Rs: 20,500 crore as the 20th installment of PM-KISAN, the Prime Minister’s sharp remarks on Kashmir and the opposition’s reaction created a buzz.

The PM accused the opposition of sympathizing with terrorists, saying some leaders even questioned why terrorists involved in the Pahalgam attack were eliminated swiftly.

“Should the country wait before responding to terror? The same people once gave clean chits to bomb blast accused and withdrew cases during their tenure,” he added.

On Operation Sindoor, he said, “India exhibited to the world the capability of our home-grown defense technology, including air defense systems and BrahMos missiles.”

He also said that BrahMos production would soon begin in Uttar Pradesh, further strengthening India’s self-reliance in defense. (KNO)

Srinagar: In a tragic incident, Rajendra Singh, Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Ramnagar and a KAS officer, along with his son, died on the spot when a landslide struck their vehicle in Salukh Ikhtar Nala area of Tehsil Thuroo of Reasi on Friday.

According to officials, the family was returning to their native village Pattiyan from Dharmaadi when the landslide hit their Bolero, burying it under debris. The sudden slide, triggered by continuous rainfall in the area, proved fatal for the officer and his son.

Three other occupants—his wife and two relatives—sustained injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. Their condition is reported to be stable.

Local administration and police teams reached the spot soon after the incident and launched a rescue operation. The road has since been cleared, but authorities have urged residents and commuters to avoid travel in vulnerable hilly areas due to the ongoing weather conditions. (KDC)

People suffer as J&K Bank’s mPAY services crumble

Srinagar: From failed UPI payments at shops to being stranded without access to their own money, customers of Jammu and Kashmir Bank’s mPAY app are fuming.

“JK Bank should stop pretending to be a tech-savvy bank. It is better for them to shut the app once for all,” said Irfan Ahmad, a Srinagar resident, who was embarrassed at a local shop when he bought groceries and the JK Bank services crashed suddenly.

He told KNO, that he was forced to return the items to the shopkeeper.

Pertinently, the JK Bank mPAY mobile banking application, meant to make digital transactions seamless, has now become infamous across the Valley for doing the opposite due to constant crashes, failure to load and repeated server errors.

Sameer, a University student, said this is not just an inconvenience anymore but “a digital disgrace.” Sameer said he missed a registration deadline due to failed transactions. “Why launch a service if you can’t even maintain it properly?” he asked.

Notably, the issue is not new. Users have been complaining for a long time about the app’s poor reliability.

Meanwhile, local shopkeepers, students, employees and even elderly pensioners have echoed the same grievance, saying “you can never rely on JK Bank’s digital services when you need them the most.”

Despite the rising anger, JK Bank has not issued any official statement or timeline for fixes. While the bank earlier updated the mPAY app interface, users say the backend remains as broken as ever.

When trying to open the application, it shows a message: ‘JK Bank mPAY Delight Plus—unable to connect with servers, please try again.’ (KNO)

Punjab Govt appoints Nodal Officers to ease cattle trade; Kashmir Mutton dealers call off strike

Srinagar: The mutton dealers in Kashmir called off their strike on Friday after the Punjab Government appointed Nodal Officers across districts to address long-standing grievances of livestock traders, ensuring smoother cattle trade.

According to the details available with KNO, the Punjab Government, awarded a Rs: 92.56 crore contract to AL Baber Marketing private limited for organizing cattle fairs for 2025–26 and appointed Nodal Officers at district levels, particularly in border areas to oversee livestock movement and resolve disputes over payments and documentation.

The Department of Rural Development and Panchayat Department, said that these officers will verify transport documents, ensure legal compliance and act swiftly on complaints.  “Names and contact details will be publicly displayed at all checkpoints for transparency,” the department said,

Welcoming the move, Mehraj-ud-din Ganaie, General Secretary of the Kashmir Mutton Dealers Association, said the association is satisfied with the steps taken and has resumed operations at all cattle markets. “We are thankful to both the Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir Governments. The Minister Food Civil Supplies, the Commissioner Secretary, Director Food and Civil Supplies, and others remained constantly in touch and supported us throughout,” Ganaie said.

He added that despite the strike, the association ensured that meat supply within the Valley, especially for weddings and essential needs, was not affected. “We took care not to let people suffer. Even during the strike, we managed the supply of mutton for marriage functions and other urgent requirements in Kashmir,” he said.

Earlier, the J&K Government had constituted a three-member official team to visit Punjab and hold dialogue with concerned authorities to resolve the issue of overcharging and delays in livestock movement. The team was led by officers from the Legal Metrology and Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Departments.

Officers have been directed to submit a detailed report to the Administrative Department to determine further action if required.

Meanwhile, the swift coordination between both governments has now restored normal meat supply in the Valley, much to the relief of traders and consumers. (KNO)

1200 kgs of decomposed meat seized, destroyed in Srinagar outskirts

Srinagar: Seizure of 1200 kilograms of decomposed meat and its destruction later at Zakura in Srinagar outskirts has exposed flaws in Kashmir’s meat supply cold chain with officials now widening their investigation beyond the city limits.

A top-ranking officer from the department overseeing the Kashmir region, while talking to KNO, revealed that while high-end restaurants were unlikely to have used such substandard meat, low-cost eateries and ‘informal vendors’ may have been the primary consumers of the contaminated stock. “We found the meat decomposed because it was not stored at the required cold chain temperatures. In this heat, meat left in unrefrigerated vehicles or ill-equipped storage units can easily spoil,” the officer said, citing the absence of proper packaging and labels on the seized consignment.

The Food Safety Department said the problem was not confined to Srinagar alone and that substandard meat may have made its way to rural markets and smaller eateries across the Valley, raising serious public health concerns.

“This is not limited to Srinagar. The supply of such meat is widespread and reaches rural areas as well,” the officer said, adding that temperature abuse during transportation and storage was a critical factor behind the spoilage.

Responding to speculations of a larger meat supply racket or nexus, the officer said, “We won’t call it a nexus yet. But yes, this reflects a systemic failure in cold chain handling and quality control. Even though the meat had visibly deteriorated, it was still being transported for consumption; that in itself is alarming.”

The officer said that the individual from whose godown the meat was seized has claimed that the spoilt meat was dumped there by someone else and not directly under his knowledge. “We have taken his written statement and are investigating further. The chain of responsibility is being established,” the officer said, indicating that more individuals could be brought under scrutiny in the coming days.

The official confirmed that more enforcement drives and surprise inspections were on the way.

“We will not stop here. The entire region is under surveillance, and our enforcement teams are being mobilised across districts to prevent the distribution of unsafe meat products,” the officer said. He added that public health cannot be compromised.

“Whether it’s a five-star hotel or a roadside Dhaba, the Food Safety and Standards Act applies to all. Everyone dealing in food must follow the rules.”

Responding to a rising perception that rebate schemes and budget-friendly meals at some establishments might be facilitated by the use of substandard meat, the officer said, “There is a possibility that those offering unusually cheap food might be using such low-quality products. It is a disturbing trend and will be investigated thoroughly.”

The officer said that they again urge consumers and food business operators to be vigilant.

“Everyone—retailers, hoteliers, and consumers—must verify the source and condition of the meat they buy. If they notice anything unusual, they can call our toll-free helpline 104, which remains active for public complaints,” the officer said. (KNO)

Indo-Pak relations strained after Pahalgam attack; ‘Op Sindoor’ on: GoI

0

New Delhi: The Government of India has informed the Lok Sabha that following the April-May 2025 military clashes with Pakistan, relations between the two countries remain strained.

In response to the 22 April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack, carried out by Pakistani terrorists, India launched “Operation Sindoor,” targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

The information was provided in a written reply by Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, to a question raised in the Lok Sabha. The response detailed a series of diplomatic and military measures taken by India following the attack that resulted in multiple civilian casualties in Jammu and Kashmir.

According to the ministry, India undertook decisive diplomatic initiatives following the incident and launched a targeted military operation named Operation Sindoor. The operation focused on dismantling terror launchpads and related infrastructure across the Line of Control.

On 10 May 2025, the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) of Pakistan contacted his Indian counterpart requesting an end to firing and cross-border military action. The request was accepted the same day, resulting in a temporary cessation of direct military engagement along the border.

Despite the pause in active hostilities, India has maintained its policy position that terrorism and diplomacy cannot function simultaneously. The government reiterated that any future engagement with Pakistan depends on measurable and verifiable steps to curb terrorism.

Responding to a query on whether there has been a fundamental change in the relationship between the two countries post-conflict, the government stated that its long-term strategy is rooted in a firm approach against the sources of terrorism. “India has rejected any form of coercion or blackmail and has emphasized safeguarding national security.”

“As of now, Operation Sindoor continues. There has been no official confirmation of the possibility of resuming diplomatic dialogue with Pakistan in the near future. The government’s position remains that meaningful diplomatic engagement can only take place in an environment free from the threat of cross-border terrorism,” the reply reads.

The reply also clarified that all necessary steps would continue to be taken to protect Indian citizens and territory from external threats, with no compromise on the country’s security interests. (KNO)
