PDP Leader Demands Closure of Liquor Shops in J&K During Ramadan, Rationalisation of Work Hours

Srinagar, Feb 21 : Drawing a parallel with the respect shown to Hindu religious sentiments during Navratri in other parts of the country, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Zuhaib Yousf Mir on Friday called for the immediate closure of liquor shops across Jammu & Kashmir during the holy month of Ramadan.

Mir emphasized that if cities like Kashi and Mathura can shut down non-vegetarian stalls to honor the feelings of the majority during Navratri, the same principle of religious sensitivity should be extended to the Muslim-majority union territory.

“We see that in places of historical and religious significance, administrative measures are taken to ensure the majority community can observe their faith without discomfort. Can we not demand the same basic respect in Jammu & Kashmir?” Mir questioned, advocating for harmony and mutual respect between communities.

The PDP leader also urged the administration to rationalize working hours for government employees during Ramadan, a practice already in effect in progressive states like Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. He asserted that with an elected government in place, such measures are not only feasible but a “moral imperative” to foster an inclusive environment.

“The PDP has always stood for mutual respect across all faiths. By implementing these small but significant changes, we can set a precedent of inclusivity and equity in J&K,” Mir added.
