Jammu, March 12, KNT: Jammu Police have constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe an incident in which an individual allegedly flashed a revolver and attempted to open fire at former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah in Jammu, officials said.
The incident occurred on March 11 when Abdullah, who is also president of the National Conference, was attending a marriage ceremony at Royal Park Banquet Hall in the Greater Kailash area of Jammu.
According to an order issued by the Zonal Police Headquarters Jammu, the incident took place at around 10:10 p.m. when the protected person was leaving the venue after attending the function.
Officials said an individual allegedly flashed a revolver and attempted to open fire from close range.
However, police personnel deployed with the protectee intervened promptly, foiling the attempt, the order said.
Police said a case has been registered at Police Station Gangyal in connection with the incident.
The case has been registered under FIR No. 29/2026 under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 3/25 of the Arms Act.
Officials said the investigation has been entrusted to a Special Investigation Team in view of the seriousness and sensitivity of the matter.
The SIT will function under the supervision of the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Jammu–Samba–Kathua Range.
According to the order, the team includes senior police officers from the Jammu district police and the Range Police Headquarters.
The members of the SIT include Superintendent of Police (Security Officer to DIG JSK Range) Sanjay Sharma, Superintendent of Police Headquarters Jammu Irshad Hussain Rather, and Deputy Superintendent of Police RPHQ Jammu Arvind Kumar Sambyal.
Inspectors Saroop Singh, Paranjeet Singh, Sanjeev Chib and Shariq Majeed have also been included in the investigation team.
The order directing the formation of the SIT was issued by Inspector General of Police, Jammu Zone, Bhim Sen Tuti.
Officials said the SIT has been directed to conduct a thorough investigation and complete the probe within the statutory time frame.. [KNT]
